Next Sunday I'll be shooting for the 65 mark when I get the Stealth on there. Then 70 will only be 5 away. Yeah, the last 5 are going to be the hardest to get, but hopefully the heads and pump will get it there, without removing the windshield (I don't like bugs in my teeth)...

You hit 62.2 @ Joe Pool.  You are thinking that that Stealth intake is going to give you another 2.8 MPH?  I'm real interested to see how this turns out.  I know you'll keep us updated.

As far as the exhaust thing, the subject of limited room under the lid has been mentioned in regards to putting headers on it for a free(er) flowing exhaust. How much restriction you figure the snails put on the exhaust? Assuming it has snails. I ask because I've seen some boats with logs, but instead of snails & going through the transom, they've got pipes goin over the transom. I want to say Stuart's Sanger was like that when he first got it?

Is doing something like that worth anything at all or be a waste of time...

*edit* To add, when I was talking about removing the snails, I was still meaning to keep the exhaust running thru the transom tips like it already is. Was just using Stuart's boat as an example of logs without snails...

I did not know Basset made a set that can be run under the hatch???? :smile26:

I don't think they do.... All the Bassett thru-transom headers I've ever seen were just water injected, not water jacketed like the Lightnings...

Injected headers in a closed engine compartment is a definite no-no.... :smile20:

oops my bad ......

I'm curious about this too. If that stealth intake works out, I'll put one on mine too when I put a larger carb on her. Since I'd like to put a scopp on my Chick Lid, clearance shouldn't be a problem.

Keep us posted! This could turn into a best bang for your buck thread. We will have real world testing to back the facts! :smile30:

A combination of the Stealth and MUCH SMOOTHER WATER.. Remember, the water at Joe Pool was probably the worst for making a top end run. When off plane I had water coming over the bow... and still hit 62. I was hoping to get out on Hubbard early one day this week and make a run on smooth water but came down with a bug and was stuck at home for a couple af days. Maybe tomorrow morning if there is no early delivery. I think it would have gone well past 62 had the boat not been jumping soo much.

I think for it to be accurate I need a good run with the stock SCJ intake on smooth water, no NOS. My best real top end with the Edelbrock carb was 56.7 on smooth water early one Saturday morning. I need to run the Demon out on smooth water now to get an accurate assesment of the improvement it made before installing the Stealth.

even that will not be that accurate of a comparison. Weather plays a huge part in how a carbuerated motor runs and it has changed significantly since you had that edelbrock on.

BING BING BING BING!!!!! Reading around boards everywhere the airflow on logs isn't all too bad. Nothing like header but still way better than iron car manifolds in comparison. But the snails.. found nothing on that. Never opened a set so I can't speak for what's inside, but their purpose of not allowing water to back flow into the engine is required so going without is not an option keeping exhaust thru the transom. You can ditch them if you go over.

My exhaust is well underwater, when I come off plane my engine would take a big drink without the snails.

It'll be alot more accurate than the tidal waves at Joe Pool!!  :smile26:

Go make a 1/4 pass in your truck down a smooth road on a cool morning, then down a bumpy dirt road on a hot afternoon. What's the bigger difference maker, the temperature or the road?? Probably the road. I need a smooth road (water) to at least get a close comparison.

The hot air might take off a tenth, but bumpy road will take off a full second.

Cool, I was just kinda thinkin out loud.... You don't think a good set of flappers would keep the water out of the exhaust? I know TexasJet's exhaust tips are down under his swim step & in the water, for example. Mr. GoSlow has them on his Condor, so I know those gotta be down under the water. They do have headers, not logs, but would think coming off plane could bring enough rushing water to even overcome the curve of the header tubes if there weren't any flappers in place to hold it back?

True Dat.. but I don't want to risk my motor to a $7 flapper failure. I'm keeping the snails.

LOL, well yeah, who would... Copy that on the snails. Like I was sayin, just thinkin out loud I guess. :smile17:

This is what Jeff has on his Baja I'm pretty sure.... Not sure about Scott, but they sure look the same.

Pretty sure those aren't any $7 flappers though... :smile30:

you do not want trust the flappers,  and the bend in ttheaders a more than what snails are,,  the problem really aint coming off plane as much is it sitting in the water on anchor, and filling the exhaust and heads full of water

the inside diameter of snails is roughly 2.5 inches, in a 3" just guessing ive never measured the id....  and far as i know there is nothing inside but 180* bent.... :undecided:

I don't know if there is another flapper of some sort inside them, or maybe a wheel that only turn one way, or a leprechan with a small pail. Never had one apart to look.

Here's the exhaust Jeff had on his CVX.

They are supposed to flow better than logs, according to some people.

you sure that is a SCJ intake without SCJ heads?  You can fit a beer can in a SCJ port!!
