What is it really going to take

Back in my retail part days we used to always sell headers first.  Without getting the exhaust out there was only so much you could put in.

To answer the original post.. Back in the 80's we used to put in headers first because A) it was cheap at 120 bucks a set for Headmans and B) it was easy, like no need to pull the motor. Cheapest bang for the buck. My old 350 S10 ran iron manifolds from a van because there were no conversion headers at the time. We even had to grind a chunk out of them and weld in a plate to make a notch for the steering column. Later, I put on a nice set of heads that were gasket match and bowls blended on both the exhaust and intake sides and that motor came alive, even with the manifolds, which were also gasket matched with a dremel. Beyond the manifolds were 2 1/2" tubing with a crossover. Obviosly won't be doing a crossover in a boat, but gasket matching the logs, or at least port matching them, is most definitely in the cards.

Anyway, that was why we always went with headers first... LOL

Its kind of a mixed bag from what I've read about the inducers. Some people have good results, others don't.

Kind of like stuffer plates....

Another chart I read but can't seem to find again showed that an AA impeller spinning at 4,900 rpm in a 400 pound slick hydro hull will push a properly set up boat at about 78mph. With that said, my goal is to spin an aa impeller at 4900 rpm using power. Have to get the hull to do the rest with stuff like straightening the bottom line and adding a loader grate. Not sure about an inducer, no one has yet to step and say how awesome they are. I already have a ride plate.
You will not ever push 70 MPH at 4900 rpm's.  :smile18:
Jeff's Glasstron never hit 80...

I think after your upgrades to your motor, nominal pump work, and turning 6500 rpm's you will achieve your goal... :smile17:

James the jacketed headers are built by Lightning, can get'em polished or any color in powder coat, THEY ARE NOT CHEAP!!!. But well worth the money. Around 2k. The inducer will help load the pump but with out sufficient horse power it will hurt the performance of your boat. What is enough HP you say? every application is different but  rule of thumb is around 600HP. Hope this helps. or not. :smile17:

Sweet! Do they make a big difference over logs? I would think they do, but haven't tried them!

Same as open headers   but jacketed so no heat, can put your hand on the exhaust while running. oh wait you can't you got a hood

My thought would be to fix anything wrong in the pump first. Match the pump for the output of the engine. Remove all hooks and any accessories that add weight and don't add to power. Don't forget that windshield that is probably shaving about 8 MPH off the top end. Last but not least lay off the heavy foods. When I was racing my uncle always told me it was easier to shave weight off the driver than the car. How much gas was in the tank when James hit 62?
