What is it really going to take

Back in my retail part days we used to always sell headers first.  Without getting the exhaust out there was only so much you could put in.  The improvement from other mods was enhanced by getting the exhaust right first.  This got me thinking, James has several threads started for his project.  From what I can tell he wants to hit 70 MPH and get a better hole shot and keep the engine cover.  I'm curious though, Where is he going to find the biggest improvement?  Should he start with the pump (Shoe?, Ride plate? Droop?) exhaust, bottom work, motor work, NOS, LSX GM power?  I'm sure it is going to take a combination of things.  What is the general opinion on what it will take to get him there.

I would say that while adding power to the engine may very well get a boat to a desired speed, without giving any attention to the pump one may be spinning ones wheels, so to speak. If you ain't got it hooked up, it seems like it would be a waste of horsepower...

That would be my opinion on any build.  :smile17:

Thank you, I've been hinting around but didn't want to seem like an azz! You can put 1,000 hp in front of a wore out pump, and gain 5mph. The pump is most definatley the key! :smile30: The other question is rpm range and a aa impellor in a heavy hull. Will the motor ever make it to it's power range?

My opinion would be to get one of these!

Rebuild the motor...and match the impeller to the hp. But i'm still not sure on the hood thing! :smile17:

I wouldn't do all the work James is talking about without changing the waterlogs to something that will breath easier, maybe center risers if he is keeping his hatch. Looks like he has been investigating his water logs at least.
He will definately have to do work his pump over and utilize the new motors powerband to hit 70.

well you knew i would come in and post my supidity... so here goes and i myself is still learning,  i been told by one of the leaders in the industry

it's a combination of all things from the bottom of the boat,  to everything above it, but.... if you have a particular goal  that somethings don't need to have to happen first..... for i guy like I,  i have to start with the powerplant,  get it the way i want it,  which is never the case for anyone of us but with my particular application.... there is a limit and i have to reconnize that,  then the pump has to fitted to the hp and torque curve of the motor,  then onto fine tuning the pump and impellar to the same,  to include a shoe, ride plate and inducer and so forth.....  this is just the beginning......  and it never stops there....  :smile30:

Hey didn't uh what's his name? The other guy with the blue glastron. Didn't he hit 80 in that thing after he rebuilt the motor?

if they would fit it would be the first thing i would purchase,  but some of the low profile boat with hoods, like mine a little tough to keep'em undercover  :smile25:

It was Jeff with the other blue Glastron. I don't think he hit 80. I think he had some parts mismatched on that motor that the current owner now has for sale on CL in San Antonio. What are these under hatch water jacketed headers you're talking about?? That would be a something to invest in.

As far as my pump, I've said from day one the first thing to come apart at the end of the season will be the pump. As far as I know it's all original, never been rebuilt. I've only bought bolt-on's so far that will support my horsepower goal of 500, which will turn an AA impeller at 4900 rpm according to any chart out there.

http://www.arsmarine.com/Pump_Parts/impeller_chart.htm

Except for the nitrous I don't even think I've added horsepower, but have increased the engine's ability to breath significantly. At Joe Pool, I came to a dead stop and nailed it. Night and day compared to what the Edelbrock could do. The tach shot right to 4,600 or so with the boat increasing in speed as the pump caught up which tells me the pump is probably WORE OUT! Then again, my motor stock is rated for 330hp. An A impeller will absorb 330 horsepower at about 4,650-4,700 rpm. With the Edelbrock my rpm topped out at about 4,650. With the Demon the RPM's top out at about 4,900. That should be pretty darn close to on the money according to the impeller chart.

i think you have a good goal Blazeracer,  and agree with watch your doing.....  and when you have the pump rebuilt you will learn what direction to go for your particular goal.  :smile27:

Another chart I read but can't seem to find again showed that an AA impeller spinning at 4,900 rpm in a 400 pound slick hydro hull will push a properly set up boat at about 78mph. With that said, my goal is to spin an aa impeller at 4900 rpm using power. Have to get the hull to do the rest with stuff like straightening the bottom line and adding a loader grate. Not sure about an inducer, no one has yet to step and say how awesome they are. I already have a ride plate.

i would add the inducer before going to a larger impellar,  it will help load the pump more efficiently,  and i shoe... but that's me  :smile16:
