I am doing base / clear , with the pearl that Customtouch mentioned a page or two ago . I am a little nervous about the metal flake and the pearl laying down right and looking good , but I think it will be fine .

I'll tell you what man, FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS!! When I first sprayed my basecoat it looked like SHITE when it came out of the gun. I turned to hang the gun on the air compressor and when I turned back to look at the boat the laid flat and smooth and looked awesome. Just do what a pro tells you and you'll be fine. And no matter how bad you screw it up, lot of clear will make it all nice and shiny. LOL

Here's the basecoat... Almost was going to leave the boat like this too.

I have been blessed enough to have the input of several professionals on this project , and value all of the great advice . If it looks bad when I am finished with it its not going to be from not having someone give me good advice . But I am still a rookie , and I am determined to shoot it myself , so mistakes are definately possible . I really expect it to all work out in the end and be a good looking boat .

A little tip for you when you start spraying is to be sure and keep your paint agitated. This pearl will have the tendency to sink and settle to the bottom of the paint can or your gun rather quickly. Stir it up very well each time before refilling your cup and if there is going to be an extended period of time between coats, (like you need to wait for the paint to dry to fix an imperfection before continuing) don't let the paint just sit in the gun. Dump it back in the can and put a little paint reducer in the gun until you are ready to resume spraying. This will help insure an even distribution of your pearls and metallics.

I have heard of that with the metal flake , but didnt think about it being an issue with the pearl . Thanks for pointing it out , I will tty to keep it in mind when I am spraying the boat .

Custom touch is spot on (no pun intended)!!
My biggest concern when I am painting with metallics or pearls, or even flake is "tiger stripes" (when you can see lines where the paint gun passed over and they are "heavier" with the flake and create lines)... To avoid this I shoot regular (on first coat or two) like I would any other paint, then on my last coats, I lift the gun up some from the surface and go at different angles and a little faster over the paint. This creates a "mist" so to speak over the surface and spreads the paint so you don't end up with lines.
Painting is not that hard, it's just time and patience and using the right sequence and system. Sounds like you have the hard part done. Actually painting is fun!!! That's why I do it. Putting color on it makes all the hard work worth it!!!! Sounds like you have some great help that is not steering you wrong!!!

If you haven't already, you should do yourself a favor and pick up some of these. The first is an inline water trap and the second is a paint filter that will fit in the cup between the cup and gun. Both are just cheap insurance for you. Just be sure the air pressure is regulated before the water trap. They are plastic and won't with stand a whole lot of air pressure. Any paint jobber will have them.

Sure hope I'm ready cause I'm going in! Might try to paint this weekend if I can't get motor parts by then.

Not much going on at the shop today , so I got the boat almost finished block sanding . I am still on hold with a few of the motor parts , so I am thinking I might change my plans up a little and go ahead and paint this weekend instead of waiting until after the motor is ready . If I had all the motor stuff I wanted to take the next week or two to work on getting the motor stuff all ready to go , but I really need to have everything here before I can do that . Rather than lose a weekend of working time I will probably paint this weekend .

I scored a vette balanced for the motor today,  for $40 shipped  jump.gif
It should get me an extra few inches of leg room in the back seat  :smile30:

Well , I can't seem to get ahold of the pinstriper . I am sure at this point it is too late to try to get him to come stripe the boat Sunday before I clear it , so I got some mid-clear ordered . I will get the paint and the mid-clear done this weekend and hopefully I can get it striped sometime next week and shoot the final clear .

I finally got Robert on the phone and he drove over to look at the boat.  We are all set to get the paint work started now! And we are even throwing in some extras that were not part of the original plans.

I will post pics as soon as the paint starts going on.  We are ditching the purple and going back to what I wanted to do in the first place. A mahogany wood deck look with the blue on the rest of the boat.  I looked up how to do the wood effect and did some practice panels and decided I sucked at it, that's why I was going to do the purple.  But Robert knows how to do it right, so I am going back to the wood deck concept. I will try to post a few pics of his work today some time, he is an amazing artist.  Some of the painters here might know him, his name is Robert Nouis.  He owns Nuclear Designs Pinstriping & Graphics.
