if your pics are showing the steering wheel and shaft/pinion assemble and bazel already assembled then your gonna need to take it apart to mount the shaft/pinion to the dash,

I think i have the box that my new cable came in and i'll see if the instructions are still around,  it's been 5 yrs or so and i may have throwed it out,  but i'll look later in the day

This pic comes from JetBoat Perf. website, shows all the pieces in the kit.

The round flat piece bolts to the front of the dash, the pinion comes from the back side of the dash & it bolted to that. The rack will be bolted to the pinion with 4 bolts, with the rack more than likely being below the pinion, if that makes sense.

When turning the wheel to the right, it should be pushing the cable out, turning it to the left should draw the cable in. This is assuming you're running the steering cable down the left side of the boat.

If you decide to not purchase a kit and buy things seperately, be sure that you also purchase a new steering helm too.....it'll save you a lot of "Play" in the steering wheel if the gears are matched and wear at an even rate.

The setup that Devilman linked is the same one I keep running into everywhere I look . Mine is not the same as that one . The cable that I posted a pic of is not really the same as mine either , but close . I will go out and snap a few pics so y'all can see the other parts of it a little better .

Okay , here are some better pics . There is a long bolt that goes through the entire unit that holds all the splined gears and other parts of the unit together in one piece . Pics are clickable

View from the back side

Side view , one of the two bushings on the shaft goes in the front , and the other in the back of the cable . I assume I need a large enough washer to hold it all together .

The cable

is there another ring that goes with it??,  otherwise bolt it to the dash and bolt up the rack and your done

Another ring for what ? These are all the parts that were in the box that I got . It seems like a fairly simple setup , I just want to make sure it's right . There was a bushing in the wrong spot , but I got that right now . It seems kinda weird that the one bolt holds everything together . If you take the steering wheel off the whole thing will fall apart .

i can see that,  i thought there might me a ring that goes behind the dash,  i can see that the bazel is threaded,  looks ok to me

put on the boat and be done with it

Seems to me that the chrome collar bolts to the dash and once the rack is bolted on the wheel should be able to be removed and the pinion should stay.  Without the rack bolted onto the housing though I can see the pinion just falling out.  Is there a cap for the rack on the other side for the other busing or is it closed and the bushing needs to go inside the rack?

The pinion gear goes all the way through the rack , then the bushing slides into place , then the nut and washer go on to hold everything in place . To remove the steering wheel you remove that nut and the bolt slides out from the front . I am not really planning on changing the steering wheel very often , so it's not that big of a deal . But it's not really easy like alot of the setups I have seen .

There should be a couple of bolts to bolt the rack to the housing as well.

Three bolts hold the outer ring of the helm onto the dash from behind . Four bolts hold the rack onto that piece . Those two pieces will stay in place if you are changing the wheel , everything else is held together by the one long bolt through the center of the steering wheel .

Your ring is integrated into the helm. Get some good tough washers for the back side. Check your steering when it's installed. If it steers in opposite of what it should, remove the cable, flip the helm, reinstall the cable on the opposite side. Don't ask me how I know this.... LOL

I got the kit the the ring (in the first pic) and just installed it as is not even considering the cable was now on the top instead of the bottom. Drilling three new holes in the ring and flipping the entire assembly fixed it.

Is there a part number on the cable assembly you have now?

Not that I can see , but it has Mercury cast into the rack itself  crazy.gif I sure hope it's Mercury Marine and not that other Mercury  :smile19: If it is the other one my boat will not be nearly as fast and reliable as I had planned  think.gif

I am 99% sure that is just like the rack I have on my Rebel.  I can't do it right now but I will go out and take a couple of pics if that will help you.  I'll PM you my number as well just in case you want to call while I am looking at it.  It will probably be tomorrow before I can get out there.
