at the risk of making blaze mad once again, I have to state: I wouldn't run royal purple in my lawnmower.

Now that that's said, I have 3-4 front cover plates, send me your addy, if you need one.

I am curious what you would run.  Personally I run Valvoline VR1.  I look at it this way, My 72 Chevy truck has over 400K on the motor and it has never been apart.  Each and every one of those miles was done with traditional motor oil.  I see no reason to mess with that.

I have a buddy that I raced with that lost 2 camshafts using royal purple (after beak in on penzoil 10w 30). He  switched to penzoil 25/50 and hasn't had a prob since.

I've read the newer oils are missing a lot of the additives the old (GOOD) oils used to have.

They are.  Realistically flat tappet cams are a thing of the past so its become a specialty market that needs those additives.

Probably be Valvoline VR1 then.

Oil debates are as heated as Ford VS Chevy debates.  There are several oils out there with ZDDP still in them.  With a mild build like yours VR1 should have more than adequate ZDDP levels IMO.  Plus you can get it at any local auto parts and it won't break the bank.  I am still curious what Duane (and others) suggest.

Hopefully he's boxing up a water pump plate right now..  :smile30:

I have to go pick up some nitrogen at Garland Welding supply, then do a damned service call. Be back later.

I break mine in using the Rotella 15-40 until the ring seat and then I use Mobile One 15-50 synthetic ..

I might switch this year to VR-1 if Wal Mart quit carrying the Mobile One 15-50

My brother in law uses the VR-1 oil ..

I idled mine in for about a half mile last year with zero oil pressure and did no damage to the bearings or crank , that was when I broke the oil pump screen off last year..

Headed to fed ex now.
I run rotella t 15/40 or valvoline racing 20/50.....with a flat tappet, it also gets 8 oz of lucas (or equivalant) break in lube...(moly and zinc)

Thanks Duane, I guess the rumors aren't true after all.. LOL

Getting the bottom all finished, I thought this was kind of neat. I've built a few Chevies, OK, a lot of Chevies. In fact nothing but Chevies (as far as car motors go). This is my first Ford build. I like how a lot of this stuff goes together like the corner seal for the oil pan.

And the pan's all buttoned down with more ARP stuff.

A couple of people here mave mentioned Rotella 15/40. That's all I run in my F250, but I was thinking it's a diesel thing. That's what the auto parts store guy recommended for the Powerstroke. It would probably work pretty damn good in a boat too!

Rotella T is one of the few oils left with anti-wear additives. vr and rotella...only 2 I believe.

I was told Delo is one also. That's why I run it. Valvolene has a new diesel oil also, but I don't know what's in it. think.gif

I've run the Rotella T 15-40 since day one 5 years ago in the 521. I've looked at the bearings twice and left them in. It's worked great for me
