Darn it, sorry about your luck Billy that was not what I wanted to see when I skimmed over here.

I hope you get lucky and you don't have to much damage. What kind of rpm have you been turning?
Did not check Sunday with the playback on the tch  , I was just out having fun .. But I think it was right at 6900 on a full pass .. Most likely let go about 6000-6500 .. It bent some valves for sure
Boat still running way to wet .. Need to adjust plates up more when i get engine going again ..

What would you guys use .. Good double roller chain , belt drive or gear drive .. Give me the name and type of the one that you prefer.. I would really like to stay with the chain since the engine is set up for it .. I don't have to have stuff made or adapted that way ..
Who makes the best chain set out there ??

Billy,

Was that a Cloyes double roller you had on it or?

FWIW this is what I have on the 489 but I have lower pressure pacoly endurance springs 290ish at seat just under 700over the nose and the Comp hi tech 420 lobe profiles aren't real aggressive.

Cloyes 9-3610TX3 race billet

A jesel is 1012.78. Looks like the cam stopped didn't put the chain in the pan.  That looks like a JR Performance set. They have 10 holes in the gear. Cloyes 12 and Rollmaster 8. I have used all of them. Will the cam turn with the valve train lose?

number 5 and number 4 valves are bent .. Stuck about 1/2 inch down maybe . All pushrods are straight . Retainer clips, locks and springs and valve lash caps are  all in place . Not sure the make of the gears , I have not pulled those , the chain was suppose to be a Cloyes according to the invoice from the previous builder but it is stamped JAPAN .. Irritaing to me .. What we think may have happen is this is the same chain that was on the engine when the two retainers broke for not being the correct retainers and it fraique it and caused it to break now .. Just a guess ???
EO - the cam turns pretty easy with the fuel pump installed . I can feel the pressure of that , so if I had the fuel pump off I am sure the cam would just spin really easy

Billy I know you don't want to hear this but you'll need to disassemble the heads and set the valves up in a fixture and roll them against a dial indicator. The machine shop can set them up in the valve grinder and see if they're bent as well but if some are bent so bad they won't close I'm afraid you'll find more.

Agreed .. I am sure they all may all be bent .. But the cam did not turn at all because the chain was still laying there on the top gear , so may get lucky and just these two are bent ..

I really hope you're that lucky, be sure and really inspect those lifters that are inline with the bent valves, I'm not sure I wouldn't replace them to JMO.

we had already planned to send them all back to Isky for them to inspect this winter anyway .That was one item we did not replace . Isky  RedZones is what we have in there ..

I think that even Cloyes chains are imported.  I'm not certain.

Did some digging today.  Cloyes appears to still be mfg. in Fort Smith and made in U.S.A.  digging deeper into that.  When I was still employed by Federal Mogul Cloyes was 100% USA and except for their engine builder cheapie price line appears to still be the case.  Not true of FM... they are mainly import.

Lot of good comments from engine folks around DFW on Rollmaster Chains.

Springs are pac 1247. 835 open. Going to get all new valves and iconel exhaust valves. Will get either a Jesel or milodon gear drive. Leaning toward Jesel. JJ can make a drive for the water pump. Lifters will at least get rebuilt if I don't go with EZ roll extreme upgrade. Ain't doing this again.  Sorry Billy, I should of changed the damn chain at least. Hindsite is 20/20.

Not your fault at all Galen .. old chain only had maybe two hours on it .. It was sold to use as a Cloyes ..

Wayne - I went back out and checked the oil pump to make sure somnething did not lock it up .. It spins fine and pumps oil out the sending hole by turning by hand .. So don't think it was something getting into the oil pump gears ..
Pretty sure it is going to have at least half the intake valves damaged .. I did a flashligh test up the sparkplug hole and I could see light in the intake runner on a few of them ..
I wonder how a big trolling motor would work on this thing .. Maybe I cant  tear that up ..
Oh well - this will give me more time to help Galen with his Hydro when he comes down and maybe be able to visit with more people ..

Well if the bottom end is fine, consider yourself lucky! Not that valves are cheap, but better than buying rods and pistons. :smile30:

I hope the bottom end is OK ... We will not know for a while .. Galen will finish tearing it down this winter .. I don;t think it hurt the pistons , but who know until those heads come off ..
