Timing sets

I need to make a decision here.  My Comp double roller has quite a bit of stretch after just one full season on the water.  There is a lot of debate out there in the car world on this topic.  It seems there is quite a bit on evidence that a stock link plate type chain is actually the better choice.  Gear drive is out of the question.  I want reliability not every last HP.  Here is an interesting article on timing sets.

What are you running in your boat and why?  What RPM are you turning?  How much HP?

roller..... took a link plate out that had probably one season on it,  it was stretched like it's been in there for 10 years.....

as with anything don't skimp on the price.....  there is many different grades...  just my .02

I hear ya.  It's not really a price issue but more a reliability issue.  Have you checked your roller since you installed it?  Curious how much stretch it has.

great !!! thats one thing I didn't look at when I put the motor back together this winter ... it was only run 17-18 times last year ... think it'd be ok  ? its a Cloyes roller ... I never even took the cover off ... Arrgg

I just put a new roller in mine yesterday.  I'm planning on pulling it down at the end of this season and check the stretch.  (Comp). If you can wait a year, I'll have an answer for you.  lol.

no i haven't but i will say this....  the one i stuck in it.... i went against what i preach,  it was a cloyes....  but i didn't purchase the best they had to offer.... for i didn't know if the engine was gonna stay as is..... now the other engine i took out,  has a droller  and it's tight and has 6 hard years on it,  after i got the boat....  but i don't know what brand it is....  i haven't taken the cover off..... 

i personally think... with all brands we are not getting good products,  with the chinese metal that is in them  :smile30:

There is a lot of talk on the Pontiac boards about guys having to change their roller chains mid season in their street/strip cars due to stretch.  They switch to a link plate chain and it is fine for a couple of seasons.  These are $80 - $100 billet gear true rollers from a variety of manufacturers.  I have been paying more attention to the race guys since the boat is a more severe duty than a street car would see.

My gut is to go with a good quality double roller.  That is only because it is what I have always done.  I'm a little gun shy after seeing this one stretch so much after one season.  Even though the PO said this is a Comp set it looks like it may be cheap Chinese piece like so many other things I have discovered in this build.

I'd agree with Kona IF I had not found evidence that my comp piece is a re-boxed Cloyes part.  Do you remember what if anything was on the chain links?  Mine say Rolon.  It's easy enough to check stretch.  Maybe take 5 minutes and check it.
