Timing sets

Found this post over on the Pontiac forum.

"The Melling 40408, Comp 3112, Speed Pro 224-3112, Cloyes "True Rolller" (with the 3112 in the part number) are all the same set. They're made by Cloyes. They come in different boxes. These are the "true roller" design with individual "seamless" rollers on each link."

And a pic of the Melling piece mine looks nothing like.

I have found part numbers for Pontiac from Comp of 2112 and 3112 but no 2212 like is stamped on my gear.  More evidence a cheap set was in my motor??????? :smile29:

Interesting that the part numbers in the post I found are supposedly all the same part just re-boxed.  At Summit, Melling $50, Comp $60 and Cloyes $106.  think.gif

It's been confirmed.  Double row not true roller.  Check out the seams.  I'll be looking for the Melling piece local so I can put my hands on it before I buy it.

I'd leave mine if it was 1/8 to a 1/4 on the slack side with the other side tight.  Mine is more like 1"

well COOL ! at least I won't have to worry about that one .... now I'll have to drive to Denton and check the other 2 ... at least they don't have the covers on yet... plus I apparently need a new gasket for this one since someone made me take it apart ....... :smile29:

LOL.  But don't you feel better about it. You can also check the stretch by turning the crank and watching the rotor.  No need to remove the cover unless the pay is excessive.

I'll post a link here on how to check chain wear for anyone in the future.  This is written for SBC but it pretty much applies to any motor with a timing chain.
