Project Liberator

Junk yard truck motor, I bought on Craiglist.  Pulled the main caps and rod caps to check the bearings for wear.  Everything looked OK to me.  Poured oil in it, changed the intake to a Marine intake, and fired her up.  Ran rough for about 30 minutes, 1 minute at a time, working on setting the timing and fixin leaks, when BAM, POP, and Oil out the side.

Dang Jim that totally sucks.  I know you were wanting to get this ready in order to sell it.  Hope the next one works out maybe Patch has something lying around you could throw in it.

OK Up date on some major progress.  Sold a lot of parts, thank you for the response on Texas Hot Boats Forum.  Didn't even have to post on Craigscrap or Performance Boats site.  I am fully funded for a brand new marine short block and a fresh valve job on the heads.  the short block is at Bryan Fed Ex and I will pick it up Monday.  The heads could be ready Tuesday, but I'm not holding my breath for that miracle to happen.  I will have the short block mounted in the boat and be ready to drop the heads on when I return from my next offshore adventure.  I will pick the heads up the Thursday prior to Rockin the Cove, and have all day Friday to torque them down and install the intake, carb, scoop (thanks Drumzilla), hook up the wiring, and fuel lines.  I would so love to be breaking in the new motor on Saturday.  Well that's my plan for now.  I will have pictures of tomorrows progress and Mondays progress for sure.  I'm Freekin excited.

Didn't get anything done on the motor Sunday.  Honey-Do's were a priority and by the time I got them finished, the heat had kicked my Butte.

Today I picked up the short block from Fed Ex and it's in the back of my truck.  I'm grabbing a bite to eat, then unload and start putting things together.

Yeah Honey Do's wiped me out yesterday too with cutting the grass and weed eating.  Had to straighten up my patio to make it presentable and install the new work bench.  Never seems to end.

it is a Ford, Out the door no Core, no oil pump, no lifters, no oil pan.  Marine block (don't know what that means) brass freeze plugs, flat top pistons, (9.7 to 1 was $125.00 extra).  I bought 325.00 at Summit.  (Zinc additive,Oil pan, Oil pump, all Gaskets, lifters and misc nuts and bolts. 1 case of oil, 2 filters, Lock tight, and gasket sealer at NAPA $125.00.

Heads are costing me $12.00 a hole for valve job and resurfaced.  This motor will go in the Liberator to break-in and leak check.  Then this winter the tired 1978 Ford comes out of the Glastron and this one goes in.

Oh yeah, I got to order a book on Amazon on" How to put a 460 Ford back together" $16.00 Plus shipping.

A shade under $1600.00

Never buy a $500.00 Motor off of Craiglists, unless you need it for spare parts or a core.

Yeah, get your $500 motors from junk yards instead. Really, they will usually put a one year guarantee on a motor.
