now that is a good question,,,  this is what i would do take a flat tipped punch and beat it flat,  then take a pointed punch a punch a dimple in the center and then drill

with all that drilling you better get a magnet to trap those shavings,  before they make it to the oil pan,  but it's too late,  now go and get yourself a oil pan plug with a magnet made into it before your fubar your bearings

im pretty sure that im past all of the broken drill bits... but the bolt itself is insanely hard.\

have i destroyed my head yet? and what size hole do i need for a helicoil.

Kinda hard to tell in the pic, but doesn't seem to be any damage to the head? Not real familiar using the helicoils myself, one of these guys that has used them before could tell you better than I, if you decided to go that route. I wouldn't think the bolt would be that hard?

The bolt shouldnt be that hard its usually a drill bit that is.

ive been proactive about this... i have 2 magnets on either side of the drilling surface... and if one flys up it gets caught in the magnet... other than that ive just been going super slow and collecting the "dust" on my magnet as i go.

plus a towel covering the holes just in case... :smile30:

Chuck your bits real short so the don't flex.  Also, I like Kona's punch idea.  It really needs to be on a drill press to do it right.  It's gonna be real hard to keep a drill bit from drifting with a hand drill.  Also, since youre not gonna pull the head, air drills tend to work better for this kinda work.

quit ur pesimistic attitude... lol, i have a hand drill... and im determined to do this.... i wish i had air, and i wish i had a nice machine shop with all the tools and bits in the world... but i have a 19v craftsman, and a dewalt drill bit. nay-sayers!

what about just drilling the bolt itself out, instead of trying to extract it? seems if one could use one of them fancypants drill bits to get rid of the broke off drill bit, then just go after the bolt. Chew enough of it off & then clean the threads in the head with a tap.

I would try that or go the helicoil route before I'd swap the head...

You have not destroyed it yet.  For the Heli-Coil, you need to refer to the kit and see what size bit it recommends.  It may even come with it depending on where you get the kit.  Take one of the bolts with you to the part store so you are sure to get the right size.  I prefer NAPA or O'Reilly over Autozone.

The heck it wouldn't.  Stainless bolts gall and snap all the time especially one that small.    I just spent an hour drilling one out of a bowl that was snapped off by someone else.  There were at least 3 bolts snapped off in this pump.  In fact they were all 1/4 20 at that.  They are much easier to break than even a grade 5 bolt.

FWIW;

If you end up getting really frustrated at the boat (most of us do) either step back and breath a little or come at it the next day clear headed and level. It will seem easier and you can take your time.

I've had to drill out SS and it's not very fun. I stripped two Allen head bolts in the header adapter plate. I had to drill both of them out an EZ out them. PITA
