try one shim at a time and if you find you still have noise....  you may have a bad started....  even thou I'm a ford guy i've worked on chevies with others that have had that problem.....    do you have the old starter,  if so see if it does the same thing

yeah i do... and it doesnt make the noise.. i just took it off and it was working....

the only problem its a car starter and quits working when damp.  it was also 3 times the size as the new starter.


ill try 1 shim and see what happens.

did you by the small bodied hi torque starter,  and was it from Jegs?

1 shim!  :smile19: i feel like an idiot.  its timed at 12 degrees and ive relocated the blower to the back side of the bilge and ran the tubing up around the inside edge of the hull, and dumped it out the back of the boat essentialy. i installed a vent on the top of the engine compartment and left the top open and uncovered. ill post pics of this later.

Glad you got it figured out.  No worries when you knee deep in the problem sometimes its hard to see the solution.

So did one shim fix it or.....? If I am reading it correctly, you are having problems with a new starter? They may have gave you the wrong starter. There are a couple different ones depending on how many teeth are on your flywheel. I ran into that on my Camaro once...

HE got it figured out last night,  started out with no shim,  then to many shims,  then one shim  :laugh:

Ok, I saw where he posted "1 shim" but didn't say if it helped or not. cool.. :cool:

FRIDAY!, only 8 crappy hours of work left until i am lake bound.  Wife took off with my boat this morning, and i will meet up with her at the campsite this evening with the jet skiis.  :smile17:


Last night i decided i would go ahead and test fire the  boat again, and it started grinding the flywheel again. so i made a midnight trip to autozone and picked up 2 packages of shims., and it turns out that its more like 1.5 shims that it needs.  the autozone package had 3 thicknesses and i used a big one and a little one.  it clears smoothly and goes back in its home now. fires every time!  :smile28:
