Good question!
I haven't used a whirlaway yet. Never had one in any of my other race or playboats. My new (to me) Hondo runnerbottom has one in it, but I haven't had it up to speed yet. I slow-tested it at the lake a couple of times, to make sure I liked it , before going completely through it and safety-checking all and setting it up for me, as a playboat. But my slow-testing was nowhere near fast enough to evaluate the whirlaway.
Ron (Braaksma) told me, if I remember right, that he preferred the boat to slow down quicker, when he got completely off the throttle, than it would if the whirlaway disengaged and just ratcheted, instead of using the full engine-braking. Better brakes, in other words.
Could be important, sometimes.
Sounds right to me, so far, and I should have my own opinion within a month or two--
Eddie
