Just got a call from the machinist...apparently the thrust bearing on the crank needs to be welded in place to keep the crank from moving fore and aft?? Also they said I need to grind the crank as a simple polish won't do. I should still get the motor back tomorrow afternoon....
Thats about all there is.

They are welding and re-machining the crank. Correct? I figured the thrust would be screwed. :smile18:

Thanks GH. Like you said, this isn't a Ford/Chebby thing....it's a result of other failures too. The pumps thrust bearing went out and it pushed the pump shaft forward. That in turn pushed the crank forward in the motor.....and then that put stress on the pistons rods too...causing the pistons to crack. In addition to the thrust bearing going out, the motor overheated the same day too. So....with forward force on the crank and overheating (detonation) my new motor ate it big time.
The pump was rebuilt with all new parts last September and now the engine has been thoroughly inspected with repairs made to the crank. I should get it back from the machine shop today and hopefully build it tonight and tomorrow night with an install into the boat on Saturday. I know that's aggressive too.....but it's a worthy goal.

Normal Wednesday night for the Lavon group this week... 20 peeps at my shop grilling and watching Cliff build his first motor.
You ordered assembly prep on the block? That thing's gonna look all purdy when you pick it up.

Thanks to some great North fellers that made awesome supervisors, I managed to get the short block assembled last night. I had five guys with beer in their hands and elbows cocked 90degrees while holding the beer, throwing out advice while I was assembling the motor.....lol. That's the spirit!
Five chiefs with beers and one Indian with a wrench made for a great time!!
Saturday will be the assembly of the long block and an installation into the boat. I'll post pictures later.
