I use Joe Gibbs XP7 the main reason is it still has all the additives in it is very high in zinc and is great for marine engines. The problem with most oils they removed the zinc and zdp etc and that was what you want in a boat to protect the crank and rod bearings. The current off the shelf oils have these items removed and that can allow pitting and corrosion which is a major problem with boats you run them hard with water every where then let them set for periods of time the Gibbs puts a film on everything and prevents pitting and corrosion. He gets around the EPA by stating for offroad and racing only so its technically not available for on the road vehicles.

http://joegibbsdriven.com/products/semi-synthetic/index.html  Here is a link and you need to look very closely at many of the over-counter oils as all have had the Zinc removed so they may have been high in Zinc last year they are not now.

Same deal with Valvoline VR1. That why most of us run it. It's labelled as "racing oil". Still very high zinc content.

Rotella is also hin zinc due it being designed for diesel engines. Don't know how accurate it is, but I've also heard Rotella lacks anti-foaming agents, because it's for diesel engines that rarely see over 3,000 rpm. Not the best choice for something turning 6,000 or more. That from the rumor mill though. I'll break in with Rotella then run with VR-1.

Lately, since I have been running the boat extremely hard, I started running Golden State Straight 30.  It has superior protection.  Im not sure about the contents of the oil, but the availability and price are incredible!!

My motor builder, Wayne Calvert, swears by Joe Gibbs oil and that's what I use as break in oil.

i'm gonna head  over to houston and try a case of the brad penn 20w50, the green oil supposedly it is great oil compared to joe gibbs, and it is less in price which i like. 5.50 a qt. and there are two dealers in houston.

I'm amazed that more boaters aren't using synthetic oils.
Its time to stop using the buggy's and whips.  Things have changed in the last 50 years.
If your happy, keep on the same path if you want.

It's not a good place to save a few dollars though.

So while chastising people for their choice in oils, I see you neglected to mention what you run in yours....

It's a secret.

Break-in oil is Valvoline VR-1 followed by Mobil 1, 20-50w.

I am not saying it is the only combination that works, but Synthetic oil has demonstrated for many years that it provides longer life, ability to withstand higher heat and less friction than conventional oils.
Virtually every high performance car manufacture recommends running synthetic oil in their cars.

I guess great minds think alike, I run the same way. Except I run 10/30 but I'd prob run 50 if I had that aluminum lung of yours.
