Good ideas Mike.  I actually have a connection to that Taco Casa.  It was already on my list to get in touch with them for next year.

Matt not pulling away from T for T but you might try that hole    CARS FOR CASA if you want info for that let me know.  Or get with me that could be a HUGE DEAL for the boat world as well.  Just a THOUGHT !

Matt,
Each Taco Tuesday at Taco Casa (Beltline @ I30) there is a group of cars from some club. They hang out for about 2-3 hrs. Similar to Wed's. @ Lavon. Might check with them. They might be interested and even know others.

I went to the New Years Day show two years ago at Taco Casa. They had 185 registered participants and it was BAS A$$!. Last year was rained out. Concrete Lizards is the group that puts it on. One of their guys with an old T-bucket bought a fridge from us last year and gave me the run down on their club.

Fritts Car Shows is the promoter for those events.

It's a $10 entry fee for the events, but they are actual car shows, not just a group of guys hanging out. This is for the Saturday events and these guys are serious about their hardware. No info on the Tuesday hang out, but I would imagine it's just a bunch of guys from Concrete Lizards since they are based in Garland because these same guys are in the Tom Thumb parking lot in Rowlett every Thursday. I took my boat once this past summer and the old short wide a couple of times on my way home from work. They really frowned on cracking a cold one too. Cool guys, but they are definitely a different breed from us.

Non event Saturday night they go to Kellers. Now that's a venue!! LOL We did a Sunday there last winter and it was cool...

BTW, $10 is a STEAL to hang out with friends compared to a day on the water. Truck gas, boat gas, beer, brats, charcoal easily adds to over $50 every Sunday. LOL

Most of the money the Concrete Lizards collects goes to some kind of charity so I'm down.

Wish I could have made this T for T show.

I agree.  The issue I see with the CASA event it timing.  It is in May.  At that time of year most of the boaters spend their weekend on the water.  I am all for helping you get a group together to support this.  We can try it again this year and see where it goes.  Nothing says we cant support two events.

The good thing about the toys for tots deal is the timing.  Most of those events happen close to the holidays.  At that time of year people are thinking about giving.  It is usually after the boating season is over but not so cold no one wants to get out.

My gut says we are better off with a more casual event.  An event that is focused on the charity and not on the show.  If we have to pay an entry fee fewer are likely to enter and that entry fee could have gone toward a donation.  I don't know, You guys tell me, Of the ones that were at the event would you still have come if you had to pay $10 or $20 to enter?  Would you have cut your donation budget if you had to pay an entry fee?

I do think aligning with a car and/or motorcycle group is a good idea.  Either I will find a good fit or I will organize a new event that fits.  Keep the suggestions coming.

Kellers is on my radar as well.

10 dollors isnt an issue.  YEa  I understand about the timing with CASA thats why I havent really pushed to try to make it into something big.  Matt I talked to a guy that lives in Rowless of off Dalrock he has TWO top notch show cars and he was telling me that his hole club does stuff every year toy drives and so on.  If you want more info let me know but I say just go with your GUT feeling and Im sure most of everyone will be behind ya.

I talked with the guy from Concrete Lizards today. Their next big event they have is New Years Day at the Dairy-Ette on Furgeson and Oates in Dallas. He said they have parking for 85 cars and are expecting about 130 to show up. Over flow is the truck place across the street. No room for boats at this event. BUT, they do Taco Casa on Tuesday, Rowlett on Thursday and Dairy-Ette on Friday night. They would love for us to come hang with them on a Friday night sometime. The best part, the Dairy-Ette has no liquor license and BYOB is A-OK!! Sounds like a great way to spend a winter Friday night in Texas.

That is all fine and good but it has nothing to do with helping a charity.  The primary goal of this is to help a charity.  Having the show is secondary.

Here are some of my thoughts on it.  You guys can tell me if I am way off base.

Toys for tots is an easy donation to make.  You bring a toy.  You know in the end it is going to go to a kid.  You can spend what ever your budget allows.  There is no question about what percent of your donation is going to the end goal.  I just don't see the Marine's hanging on to a bike or board game as an administrative fee.  Don't get me wrong.  I know there are other events and charities out there that give 100% to the end goal.

I wanted to keep cash donations out of it.  Any time you involve cash it can get ugly.  There is always someone that wants to know "How much of my entry fee, donation, dues etc etc etc goes to the charity."

I could care less if you can drink beer at the event or not.  That is not what it is about.  In fact one of the benefits of doing an event like this is to show that we are not just a bunch of drunks at the lake.  It gives us a chance to show we are good people and as a group we do give back to the community.

IMO this time of year is perfect.  The holidays are near.  People are starting to think about giving.  It is too cold to go to the lake for most of us.  It is not so cold no one wants to get out.  It just makes sense to me.

We have talked about doing an event for several years.  I finally made the calls and made it happen.  This years event was good.  Sure it could have been better but it could have been a whole lot worse.  We did fill the box with toys.  That was the primary goal.  IMO two things could have been better.  1) As a group we could have done a better job of promoting to friends and family.  2) We need a place with more traffic and better drive by visibility.

Sears gave us a lot.  It will be hard to find another sponsor to give us free radio promotion.  They do have other events at other locations.  I am not counting them out.  I will talk to them about maybe attending a different event at a different location.  Perhaps one of the local malls.  Maybe it fits maybe it doesn't.

At any rate.  There was enough involvement this time around that I think it merits a second go at it next year.

Thanks Kona.  I certainly consider it a success.  I was happy with the boat turn out.  I would have liked a better spectator attendance.  I am confident I can make it better next year.

clap.gif  yes Matt I wouldnt give up on it just cause things didnt go as big and we all would have liked them to.  Things grow bigger every year.  I think if there is anyway to do it in a more high traffic area it would be much better turn out.  Im down for whatever.  This time of year is good as any and I have to agree with ya on the CASH donations.  Im sure between all the car clubs that are around and as many boats that are around DFW that U can get something put togather if ya need or want help u know to hauler.  I  told Jordan to get Richard and Arron to come out but they are way too busy getting ready for biker build off.  But maybe next year !  That might help IDK !

My bad, thought you were just wanting to get together and keep it casual. Went back and re-read the earlier post.
