Well , my fingers are sore , my arms are sore , and my back is aching . But all the woodgrain is wet sanded  jump.gif It took an insane amount of sanding to get all the little ridges from where I overlapped the planks to get the dark lines between the boards , but I still think it will be worth it in the end . Now it's time for a Bud Light  :smile30:

I did loads and loads of wet sanding to bury that flake and get it flat. Ain't nothing wrong with taking some 1500 grit to a perfectly good paint job. You just gotta watch sanding too much and cutting into your work. Looking great so far.

I'm not doing 1500 just yet , this round is 800 . I will be doing 1500 on the final clear , but this coat of clear will be recoated 2 more times before that .

What is a clear bra?  I was thinking it was either a typo,  or something to hold tata's ?

Last Mohican posted exactly what I was referring to. It is pretty tough and virtually invisible. It would probably provide the protection that you need but if it is too expensive then an alternative would be to use a clear "wrap" material that the vinyl wrap companies use. It would not be as tough but it would be easy to replace if it got scratched up. Just food for thought.

OK Patch , this is how we did the wood . I'm not a painter by no means , but I did have the help of a few guys that really know thier shit with figuring this out  :smile30:

Boat has been prepped , painted champagne , and clear coated with regular clear . Do not use mid-coat clear it don't work right because the reducer reactivates the base color when you do the second color .

Tape up the section you are going to woodgrain . This is the gauge panel on the dash . The other pics show how we did the wood planks .
The blue fine line tape will stay in place until all of the paint is finished , when I take it off it will be a champagne pinstripe .

After you get the fine line tape laid out tape up the entire area . I like to go around the fineline with a wider tape that is made of the same stuff as fineline and then tape to that , it is alot easier than trying to tape to the 1/8" fineline without missing any spots .

After that I will get the masking tape and paper  out and cover the area to avoid over spray . I dont have a pic of that , but you can see it in the next steps .

Next spray the top color paint on , but dont try to get it perfectly even . I like to have heavy areas and light areas , I get this by moving the gun faster and slower across the panel while spraying .

Next you wipe your hand across the paint and smear it . I go across one direction , then back the other direction .

If you want the wood to be darker than what you get the first time you can wait about one minute and spray over it again .

Then wipe it again .

After you get it looking the way you want it , clear coat it with whatever clear you are going to use .

Give the clear a little while to dry , then peel the tape and paper off . Remeber to leave the fine line tape in place where the pinstripe is going to be .

Like I said , I am not a painter , but it looks good to me . Someone might tell you a different way to do it , I saw lots of ways to do it on Youtube . I tried a few other ways , but none of them looked as good as this when I tried them .

I did have a spot that I screwed up while doing the wet sanding .  :smile18:

So while doing the dash I redid it . Good thing the woodgrain is forgiving and hides screwups  :smile14:

The wood grain has been my hold up, but what you have done shows me it is very possible. I would take you up on the offer, but I fear it will set-up before I'm ready to use it. I do appreciate the offer though! The boat is looking great man! clap.gif

Well,  everything about the rubrail is sanded AGAIN. I will sand the sides tomorrow and finish getting it ready to spray the blue.  Hopefully cleaning the shop up will go quick and I will be spraying the blue this weekend.

Well, thinking about it now, I might have started taping too soon.  I still need to clean up the shop before painting. I had planned to clean the shop, then clean the boat, then spray the paint. I had a little free time and got ahead of myself and started taping. Do y'all think I can go ahead and finish taping and then clean the shop and just use tack cloth on the tape and paper to get most of the dust, or should I just peel the tape off and start over? I am leaning towards peeling the tape off and starting fresh after the shop is cleaned up.  Right now the shop is pretty dusty from having just resanded the primer.

If your only concern is the dust and not tape tracking then you should be alright. After you clean the shop just blow and tack the boat and you will be fine to continue taping. The dust doesn't know if it is on tape or on paint. You will not want to use plastic over the fresh urethane clear though if you can avoid it. Not always, but sometimes it will put tracks in uncured urethane clear especially if any moisture gets in between. If you do use any plastic anywhere make sure that you have at least an 18" paper border between the plastic and where you are painting. The plastic will hold paint dust and trash that will blow off and get into the paint when you are spraying.
