blue pearl on blue base is not very noticable, but it makes it pop a little more, i would put it in a clear mid coat.if you mix it in the paint you wont notice it since the metallic blue probably already has metal flake and blue pearl, also im glad you shyed away from the color changing flake with the wood grain, it would have clashed.

The stuff we are talking about is not a blue pearl , and it's not really a color changing pearl either . It's prizmatic flakes , really tiny ones . Here is a link :

I just need to setup a tes panel and see what it looks like in the blue . I rubbed a little of it between my fingers and the particle size of this stuff is really really tiny , it looks completely different than it looks in the bottle too . Looking at the bottle it looks like a rainbow , but on my fingers it is not like that . Kinda hard to tell , I will have to do a test panel .

The amount you put in will have a lot to do with the effect you get. I was very apprehensive of it too when I first looked at it in the bottle but I personally like the effect it has when the right amount is mixed with the paint. Like I said, you just need to play with it a little and then decide if you like it.

I showed it to Mattie and she tried to take it away from me and put it on the boat.  Guess I will try to do a test panel tomorrow if I can get the time.  Today was so busy I was doing good to get lunch.

i have sprayed the matrix prismic flakes before, it looks like a layer of glitter on the boat if you put too much in a clear midcoat, that stuff can get out of hand and completely hide the blue, one time a guy i worked with sprayed it over candy blue for his brother and the harley he was painting looked like it was covered in vasline and ridden through a strip club. in the sun you couldnt see any blue, its cool looking stuff, if you use it be very cautious with the amount, i have never mixed it with the paint, i would think that would tone it down into a more subtle cleaner look.im interested to see the test panel with it mixed in the paint.

Thats what Customtouch was talking about was mixing it into the pain instead of a mid clear . He said something about it using the pigment from the base coat , not really sure . I know alot of pearls have to be used in a mid coat , but this one is apparently not like that . I guess I can set up a test panel and do it a few different ways just to see . I have a few things going this morning , but I will try to get something setup to play with this afternoon .

It looks like crap to put this stuff in a midcoat clear like most people do. However, when mixed in the right base coats the pigment from the paint will tone down the rainbow effect and shift the clashing colors of the flake towards the base color. The pigment also hides the  flake and it becomes a part of the color until the right lighting hits it and then it will shine through. I have done extensive testing with this stuff and it only looks good used correctly and in certain colors. The color you are using is a perfect candidate or else I would not have advised trying it. I am not guessing at what will happen when you put it in, I know I would like it, but you may not. If so, you would be the first, but personal preference is what custom is all about. Also test panels!! LOL  You will be waisting your time trying to get a picture of the effect. I have tried many times and the camera can't pick it up very well, but it is cool.

Yeah , I didn't really think test panels would show well in the pics . I hope to have some time to play with a few things in a little while after I get a few clients taken care of , then I will at least be able to post the results . If being inside of the blue does tone down the rainbow effect of the prizms and just give it an extra sparkle in the light  then it will be awesome .

Well , I mixed up 2 Oz of paint and put some of the body glitter in it and sprayed a test panel . I am sure that I probably put way too much glitter in it though . I am waiting for it to dry so I can see what it looks like out in the light , kinda hard to tell so far . I can see it , but I sprayed it outside and there is not enough sun out today to be able to really see the effect you should see .

I took a few pics of it outside with no sunlight , then I took a few pics of it under the drying light . I was really shocked when I put the panel under the light and turned on the light . This stuff really jumps out at you  :smile26:

Here is a pic outside with no real light , you can see it looks like it has some flake in it .

Here is a pic of it under the drying light . The effect is actually alot cooler in person, it does not really show well in the pic .

Ok , just a tought here . I am wondering about shooting a heavy coat of the flakes onto the boat , then painting a coat of the blue over that ? The blue that I am using is very transparent , so the flake should still show through the blue . I am just wondering if that would allow me to keep the blue brighter and at the front of things more than if I put the flake in the top couple of coats of blue ? Customtouch , you have played with this product , what do you think ?

I am going to have to play with this stuff for awhile , but it really does look cool . I taped over half of the test panel and sprayed a light coat of blue on one half , and the blue looks alot more blue . You can still see the sparkle in the light through the one coat of blue that I put on it , but the sparkle has alot more blue to it than just mixing it into the paint . I guess the flakes that show kinda silver are showing up through the blue and giving it more of a blue effect . I will play with a few more test panels and try to get more of an understanding of this stuff before I commit to what I will do on the boat .

Try a video.  Youtube is just as easy to use as Photobucket and I want to see it.  LOL.

I guess I can try to bring the video camera and see if you can get a better idea of what it looks like on video . I will try to remeber to bring it to the shop with me tomorrow .
