He already has a running motor , why would he want to be looking at a set of heads just because he broke a valve cover bolt off ? I have seen alot worse than a broken valve cover bolt be salvaged , it is just a matter of getting it done . I am not sure how much a helicoil will cost him , but I bet it would be alot cheaper than replacing the heads or taking the boat to someone to try to get the bolt out . Seems like this whole situation has been blown way out of proportion to me .

Or if it was a Chrysler he could go without one bolt I have for many a time.  But then they always say i have a screw loose maybe not maybe its just lost.

Hey what about some bailing wire and duct tape (spd seems to think I like to use those).  just silicon the hell out of it clamp it down with bailing wire wrapped from the exhaust to the intake and wrap the seam with duct tape that out to seal it.  its called riggin it not going to post the first part it could go very wrong and many ways.

Actually half serious it might work

what about just drilling the bolt itself out, instead of trying to extract it? seems if one could use one of them fancypants drill bits to get rid of the broke off drill bit, then just go after the bolt. Chew enough of it off & then clean the threads in the head with a tap.

I would try that or go the helicoil route before I'd swap the head...

i guess he could try that,  in a round about way that's been told to him,  but D-man comes in gets straight to the point...  lol

He already said the machine shop wants $89 an hour to fix it.  He already broke an extractor and several drill bits.  By everyone's account it is FUBAR at this point and not just an easy extraction or drill out and re-tap.  It is going to take a good bit and a steady drill to get that broken extractor and hardened bit out, or a good welder, or a machine shop with the right tools.  Trying to DIY it on the boat is more than likely going to make it worse.  He is obviously frustrated by the whole thing.  I'm not saying he is not capable of doing it himself. I am just saying, with the progress so far, it might be easier and less frustrating to just replace the head.  Sure it can be fixed, it just may be easier and less frustrating to just replace the head.  Just giving him some options.

If it was a top row bolt that was broke off, I would probably just try running it as is if it were mine, lol. :wink: :grin:

here's the fix,  JB Weld  and a stud and glue the biatch to the broke off bolt and put a nut on it...  there done  :smile22:

Well you could just run it with three bolts and use the Rite Stuff on both sides of the gasket. It will seal, but you won't like taking it apart in the future! think.gif

Silicone it together and it will hold .. Just keep pressure on it until the slicone sets .. It will be fun taking apart , but it would work .. Also like Kona stated , just weld a stud in place and put a nut on it ..

Where are you located?

The SBC doesn't leak oil if you silicone the valve cover to the gasket to the head. Not a lot just little dabs here and there.

I was out at the lake once, I had to pull the valve cover because it was spraying oil out (pre silicone days) long story short I ended up cracking and breaking the hole on the valve cover hold down bolt.  I Siliconed it on and let it set over night. next day out it leaked a little bit but it wasn't out of control.

i think chewing it out is my only option... this is after 2 hrs of drilling with a cobalt bit 1/8"

im pretty sure that im past all of the broken drill bits... but the bolt itself is insanely hard.\

have i destroyed my head yet? and what size hole do i need for a helicoil.

not yet but keep working at it... j/k,    if your still center of the orginal bolt keep drilling to the next size and then the next,  then soak the bolt and try and remove it,  might try a propane torch to expand the head and it might come on out.


but i have drilled them out to just to the threads took a pick and picked the thread of the bolt lose and the grabbed it with needle nose pliers and pulled the thread of the bolt out the cleaned up with a blind tap....  good luck with it

i even loaned a paddle bit used for drilling out wood with a hammer to the Swindolls at Plowmans one year so the could remove a broken intake tube from the pump,  back in action in about 30 minutes  :smile16:
