Hard to tell about the seal by those pictures.  Even if you could the shaft might have  groove in it.  Are there grease zerks or pipe plugs on the outside of the bowl?  New from Berkeley that pump was filled with gear oil.  When that seal fails it leaks the gear oil out.  Many times people replace one of the plugs with a grease zerk and then fill that cavity with grease.  Some even remove the large plug from the back of the bowl and use water to lubricate the rear bushing.  As for the gasket, You are not going to find one at your local parts house.  Most don't even have blank material big enough to make one.  I managed to find material big enough to make my own bowl gasket at Tractor Supply.

Not necessarily. Has more to do with the water you are running in.  Deep, Crystal clear water with no suspended particulate, Maybe.  Other than that I personally would want it sealed with lubricant.  Hopefully others will chime in.

I used good ol GE silicone II from Big Orange to seal between my transom adapter and bowl.  TSC probably has it or something real similar.  I put the bowl gasket on dry.

ok, so i bought 3 tubes of this GE silicon II for kitchen and bath. ill be using it to seal the transom adapter and the bowl... when i re-assemble the ass end of my boat tonight.

i installed my dizzy and my alternator last night. and need to know where i hook up my voltmeter / amperes meter.  this alternator doesnt have the terminal like the car alternator did.

ok, so change in direction. I messed up, i somehow overtightened a valve cover bolt, and it snapped off in the head.  i tried purchasing a bolt extractor kit from harbor frieght, and when i was drilling the pilot hole inside of the bolt, the drill bit broke off inside the bolt.  I tried drilling the drill bit out but keep breaking drill bits.  How in the hell am i going to get this bolt out without damaging my head? If i have to resort to a tap and dye, how do i affectivly use it?

When in doubt punt!  Take it to a machine shop.  my .02

If the drill bit was also from harbor freight you might be able to drill it out with a better bit . Most of their stuff is made pretty cheap , so I wouldn't be surprised if the bit was made of  softer metal.

Oh yeah , start with a much smaller bit than the one you broke off .

i know this is my problem, and I should have listened to myself. I was at lowes and asked the tool guy if he knew where i could find the bolt extractors, and he said they dont sell them anymore but to just get one from harbor freight.  I sat there and argued with the guy for about 10 min on the quality of harbor freight tools and that " i didnt want to break one off in my motor"... and he said Nah, you wont have a problem....  clap.gif and the award goes to...

so im gonna go buy the smallest, toughest bit money can buy and try again.

i hate to take it to a machine shop, if i can fix it myself.  If i can't fix it myself, it cant be done...lol

I just spent some time grinding an allen wrench out of a set screw someone else broke off.  It was a pain in the ass.  I used a carbide ball end bit for a dremel.  It was no easy task but it worked.

I'm done... I taking it to Ute, drilling a 3 inch hole in the bottom of it, and driving away. :smile18:

I went to Lowes, and purchased a handfull of the strongest bits i could find. Then, I went home, and tried drilling out the bolt again, and broke another bit off in the bolt. So now there is a titanium drill bit broken inside the bolt... whatever.gif

Drove by and spoke with a machine shop, he said "I'll pass", that the head is trash and i might as well throw it away and get new heads, and to call a professional next time... ASSHOLE!

is there anything i can do? or do i seriously need new heads? if so im fucked...  :smile13:

All for a valve cover bolt? I dont think so. and that wasnt much of a machine shop you took it to if that was their attitude. Sorry if i missed it but are the heads aluminum?

Have you been using a drill press? or hand drill? I think your beyond hand drill at this point. but it for sure repairable.

You are in a pickle then....

My best advise would to get the smallest drill bit you can comfortably use and keep it oiled up and go slow for a pilot hole, then work your way up. once you get a hole big enough in it might try a reverse drill bit to grab it and back it out. A little heat and parafin wax couldnt hurt either

sorry i didnt c sooner. after the first bit broke, you should have set a nut over the top and welded the bolt to the nut. its tricky but can be done. good luck. ps insure it before you go "boating" :smile30:

if i was me,  i'd start soaking it in penetrating oil,  and step away from it,  and take a deeeeeep breathe and get some left handed drill bits and try again,  once frustrated,  your on the road to really fubar the thing up....  good luck with it.....

i apparently live in podunkville... and nobody here knows what a reverse drill bit is.... where would one find this? and in good quality?

I asked the lowes tool specialist.. and he sent me to harbor frieght... should i go to autozone or somthing? im about to be forced to sell the boat if i cant get her fixed.  reasonable price to mail it to someone and have them extract it?
