Your boat is the same size as pretty much every boat on this site, so thats not it. Sounds like your electronics are getting wet & its killing it, not that the engine is actually injesting water, correct?

Possible that you have some exposed wiring or something electronic back there in the engine compartment that the water is getting to & messing with it. You need to try & see where your components are & either relocate them, or protect them in some fashion.

I have been in some pretty rough water & had water everywhere in my boat including all over the engine & I have never had that issue, not even running in the rain. I would start by checking the wiring & the connections, etc. & see about sealing them up.

ok, I got thrown off with building an engine,,,lol yes, you need to fix the concern first....where do you live?

Good point and if that much water is getting in the boat there is also the chance of water in the fuel.

It is cool building an older style sbc...parts are dirt cheap. 400hp is easily obtainable on a budget. I like all brands, I don't bash anyone's choice of power.

yes im in amarillo, my water option are merideth, w/ 8 ft swells all the time, or new mexico, or oklahoma.

i took the valve cover off.. and the casting on the heads is 333882... i hope this is good news... i just did a quick google, and someone is making 375 hp with these heads...

ill post the pics when i get back to the office.

i disagree with the cracked head idea, bc it realy does run nice, im positive its a fuel issue, or the vaccum advance/timing issue that was brought to my attn on the other thread.  im not looking for a nasty boat... i just want somthing that gets up to speed and has enough in it to toss someone off of a tube.  Any ideas about waterproofing my electrics? im sure that is 90% of it... if my starter gets wet, it stops trying to start... and somthing is getting wet and killing the motor.

there is no water in my oil.. and the motor doesnt smoke.. and i re-did the gaskets on the fuel tank, and mine is int the front under the dash.


im taking detailed engine pics and will post when i get back to better internet connection.

Ok, ignore any of my posts. I thought you were asking advice on an engine build, now that I've looked through things, looks like you need to fix basics. you may need a mechanic to ride with you and help diag the concern. And it REALLY tough to diag a concern with water that far away. Good luck to ya. I'm out....

have you changed the fuel filter :smile21:  and with the wiring your just got to start at one end and check every connection,  make sure your Dizzy cap is sealing,  coil is not shorting out...  things like that,  or relocate it they are

I don't know why no one here thought of this yet but it very well could be the ignition components or distributor if they used the distributor from the van it may not be as water resistant as a marine version.  Besides they need to be sealed units for the gas fumes.  I would check those units especially since the distributor is above the flywheel and it appears to be able to sling water up at it without the cover.  If the Distributor is wet it can cause a misfire and/or shutdown.

i think we might have hit the nail on the head!!!  im going to re-wire my boat, get a marine starter, and a marine distributor, and shrinkwrap the fuck out of everything. new rubber gaskets on the valve covers, and re-silicone the transom adapter and bowl and put it back together.  im also going to purchase a spark arrestor.  let me ask this question... if the carb was sticking out of the engine compartment could the rest of it be enclosed?

yes,  but the alternator has to be marine type,  and a functional blower

Quick Answer YES with all the other components under the cover being marine grade like Alternator, distributor and starter like Kona stated.

And yes those one wires on ebay are great for a jet boat. since they need 1500 rpms to energize them and we have to run at 4k just to putter along.
