think.gif So should I take the engine cover off of my pickup truck until I get the proper carb for running under an engine cover  :smile21:

LOL at Shannon. You know why.  A vehicle has a way for fumes to escape out the bottom.  In a boat the fumes gather is the low areas where there is no way to escape. Don't confuse the new guy. LOL.

Most of the parts from the small block will work with the BBC , the rest of the parts are easy to get to make the conversion . I would make sure the BBC runs and then decide .

i havent done any other diagnostics except take the pump apart like tom wanted me to do, to see what impeller is in it. i live in a desert and the closest water is 1hr 30min away.

So all you need is a hole in the bottom of the boat  think.gif :smile30: :smile21:

ill have to pull it, and put it in the boat just to see if it runs. and will the exhaust logs and water intake that i have on my sbc work on the bbc?

you can always stick a garden hose in the back the boat,  fill it and see where it runs out the boat,

Guessing by the pics in your other thread the engine cover is not original to the boat anyways . Why not take it off and get the big blocdk running right with normal parts and then start worrying about finding the stuff to switch over to parts for under the cover after you get it on the water and get all the bugs worked out ?

i would love to do that, however, i dont have any thing to mount the BBC in the boat, nor do i know if it will even fit.  i dont have exhaust, im not sure the pump will attach, still am going to need a carb, and intake, and water neck... all of the above... sounds cheaper to beef the 350.

yeah and nothing is original. but idc i just want it to work. cheaply. and safely.lol

Cheap and boats are not words that go together.

Not the logs , but they are everywhere . I would get the engine running in the MOHO before I ever bothered to pull it . Just run it on a small can of gas and make everything hot , you don't need the wiring or anything else from the MOHO .

keep it simple and work with what you got,  it wouldn't take a lot to get it to where you want it  :smile27:

there is no chance of that, motor home is trash.

and i know they aremt cheap.. but im obsessed and need a boat!... this was all i could afford so i need to make it work! lol

One thing about this board, threads get off track quick. Personally I woukd sort out the issues with the small block and make sure you enjoy the boat before making a motor swap. Changing platforms is never as easy as it sounds especially if you have never done it. I would not be worried about the exposed flywheel either. Plenty of boats with nothing but motor plates. That can all be addressed after you get it running right. Small block exhaust will not fit a big block.

carbs get hot boil the fuel out of the bowls then you have a compartment full of air and gas vapors, turn the key and boom!

thats why

i think he wants to keepthe engine cover cause he wants to pull skiers, not go on booze cruises like all of yall

To take the Spd approach of answering.. I never blew my Camaro or my 4x4 up with the Edelbrock carbs I had on them, lol.

I just didn't know if it was a performance thing or what.

And whatchoo talkin about, pulling people.. I don't just pull disabled boats, I've pulled people on tubes & stuff... :cheesy:

is the small block a roller, or flat tappet? let's work on a combo. And which heads are we working with?

im not sure what the internals of the 250 are, i just know it came out of an 80's van, they painted it yellow, and put it in the boat.  im pretty sure its all just bone stock, I have a set of heads that came off of a corvette 305 that i thought about putting on here with a cam of some sort, to get my power curve up and in the range of this pump. but i know just enough to get myself in trouble when it comes to the details of a motor and its internals.

id be willing to take stuff apart and look and get numbers if i need to... just tell me what to do.

also i know that u guys run without engine covers... but how do i keep from getting water in my engine? it seems the spray from the wind alone goes straight for the motor and makes it dripping wet. i think my boat is too small to be running without the cover.  I was running without the cover last time i was out and it got wet, quit working. and then i got tossed around and slammed up against a rocky damn for a couple hours until someone rescued me.

I assume you meant 350, not 250...if it's 80's it's most likely a flat tappet motor, forget the 305 heads, chamber is too small, shrouds the valves and detonates like hell. tear into the 350 and let's see what's salvagable.

ok what do i need to look for? what info do u need from me? u need head casting #'s? and block casting?    id like to stick with the 350, cuz i know it works, its just not in sync with the pump. and its already installed. lol

ill go home here in a min and pull the valve cover off and take a pic or 2.

if the motor was in a van, most likely the heads are cracked. For now, we are looking for things like that , this will lead to what parts we need to buy. A decent set of aftermarket heads is probably cheaper than buying valves, springs, retainers and labor for the valve job. depending on the budget, and what's useable, will lead us in the correct direction.

Do you have a budget?  No doubt Duane will get you pointed in the right direction on cam heads etc.  My fear is that you spend all that time and money and have the same issue.  If it is a fuel delivery issue.  Something like an air leak in a fuel line or clogged sock on the tank pickup.  No amount of heads and cam will fix that.  Why not try to figure out why the 350 that is in the boat is falling flat at 3/4 throttle?

Not doubting you Duane, just trying to cover all the bases.
