oil pressure issue?

when i ran the custom yesterday i had a issue with the oil pressure i drove it about 5 miles and it ran fine, oil still looks brand new, when cruising about 3000 i had 75 psi, when i got in the throttle the pressure would drop to 25-30, I didnt have  an issue in the hydro, all i did was change the oil pan ,pickup, and went from a mechanical gauge to an electric gauge. the oil pan and pickup are matched from milidon, and the pickup is  bolted to the oil pump., one guy said it may be clearance for  pickup to bottom of oil pan. oh i am running 50w kendahl also 8 quarts, pan also has a windage tray and baffle doors in it.

Don's was doing that at the start of summer, and what it ended up being was the pick up actually broke and was laying in the pan. It has happened twice to him.

I hope you have the baflle doors going the right way if this is the pan out of your hydro.

Is the screen in the new pickup the same mesh as the old one. I had a oil pressure problem at WOT in my boat until we changed the screen to a wider mesh. Problem solved!  crazy.gif

ok i guess i will go home and pull the engine back out, and take a look at the pick up thanks guys, guess there is no reason to change the gauge to mechanical right?

I am running the same oil so I know that's not the issue.
i know it isnt the oil, that is what i was running before, and texasjet the pickup looks like the same on the vdrive pickup, and fl350 i totally changed pans i left the vdrive pan off didnt think it would work with the jet.

Try another guage first....

I have bought a bad guage before that has never been installed, right out of the box.  I agree try another guage first.

chad said he gave me the sending unit for the autometer marine gauge, and i'm sure it was working on his, but i am still gonna double check it with my mechanical oil pressure gauge.

i think i will thanks mike

Yeah man. Try something easy first. I know my gauge drops when the oil gets warm and I suspect it could be a gauge/sending unit mismatch. Oil starvation was NOT a problem on my last motor as the lifter that got munched was not black, or even blue from heat. I was thinking about putting some sort of a Y on the oil sending unit port and attach a mechanical gauge to the block and run an electric one up front since the Enforcer will have an open engine bay.

I'd test it again with that mechanical gauge that you know for sure works.

well i pulled the motor didnt see anything wrong with the pickup, so i took some modeling claym and put on the pick up then bolted the pan down clearance between the pick up and bottom of the pan was just under 1/2".  i then installed another brand new melling high volume, and the same pickup which according to milidon is  matched to the pan, this time before i bolted the pick up to the pump i installed two washers which moved the pick up about and 1/8th of an inch closer to the bottom. i will try this i guess. i was told the clearance was supposed to be about 1/4" so i will try this now, and probably add an extra quart, oh i am also goona add a mechanical gauge along with the electric one.

nope, and that attempt at lowering the pickup didnt work, so it is back out of the boat and sitting on the stand.i was talking to outlawjet and he suggested a couple things , but he also told me that 50w is a little too thick for winter time what do you guys think about the weight of the oil? he suggested running 40 w , and then switching to 50w when it gets warm again.

I was think the same thing, I was wondering if the oil is getting back down to the pickup fast enough, (hence to thick for all the obstructions) you say it has windage tray and baffels, with 50wt oil it may be starving, Personaly I would goto a low wt oil and try it also, Maybe even 30wt just to see. I guess you aint set up to run it on a stand?  think.gif
