Everyone has an opinion, and nearly all of the opinions seemed pretty well thought out and clear.
Here are my thoughts (from someone who almost had a boat there). I will start out with saying I think putting up prize money sounds like fun, but if that is done, I would be concerned someone would be thinking about the money aspect and winning rather than thinking there are uncertain water conditions ahead and keep running rather than lose.
I agree running three or more boats at the same time may not be in every ones best interest. There were very few times I saw that happen, but it would be better for it to not happen.
Part of the reason for running East to West was due to noise concerns. There are homes nearby to the West, and by running from East to West, the boat exhaust was aimed away from those homes when running hard. It probably did help.
I would think it would be a nightmare trying to formally set up certain boats to run against each other. The water conditions vary and even how many boats are out there to run changes. It appeared that it didn’t take too long before drivers figured out which boats were similar in performance or which they wanted to run against.
Some drivers are not comfortable running against others, but enjoy running the boat until they no longer felt comfortable with the water conditions or it was far enough. Speaking from experience, when your boat is set up to run well over the triple digit mark, 600 to 800 feet is all that I am going to run in most lake situations when other boats are on the water. At that point, I cannot see the water conditions far enough ahead to feel comfortable due to other boat wakes or water swells I can’t see. Around that point, the boat is covering a lot of territory pretty quick.
I helped several people put their boat in or take it out and never did have to wait very long. I know others that did, so it would appear timing had a lot to do with how crowded the boat ramp might be. There was also a fishing tournament going on which we have no control. When there are something like 60 boats for one event and only one ramp, there is no way around some people getting there at the same time. Everyone has the option of putting in at 6:00 AM if they don’t want to wait in line. It doesn’t really work that well for me though.
Some of the issues may change due to weather conditions, such as which way the boats run. If the wind is out of the West then we may need to run to the East. I don’t want to run into the wind, I have a boat and not an airplane and would like to keep it that way.
All in all I think most people seemed pretty pleased with most things. Would anyone care to guess what the chances are the weather will cooperate like it did this year?
