It was a little too rough to do a full test run tonight at the lake however James was able to back her in and shoot a little roost on the trailer.

The chance you take with a used motor. First run on the water was a massive fail. Didn't even get to go hammer down on it. Number 2 piston shattered. Looks like the front journal had no oil going to it. Tooling around at 3k rpm to put some heat in it and it locked up. No knocking, no warning. Motor was out of a "running" 2002 Z06 that was stolen and insurance totalled. I'm sure the thieves dogged the shit out of it before they wrecked it. Probably internal damage due to an abrupt halt?? Who knows.

Oh Man! Sorry to hear about that.  As you know I've had my fair share of "used" motors. As my wife kept telling me "Don't buy Junk"
Damn I hate it when she's right!  What now, rebuild this motor, or buy something else?

Turning the rear wheels in a vette just don't compare to turning an impeller in a jet pump. Hence all the problems in an engine that was designed for a vehicle.nothing can compete for longevity with the tried and true big blocks. Just sayin :smile30:

I am sure James is going to stick with the LS platform.  There are plenty of guys out there running this platform with no issues.  This was a used engine of unknown condition.  It should have been a nice piece but you never know unless you pull it apart first.  James will get it.  He has a couple of LS veterans helping him now.

Unless I am missing something any motor in a boat, other than an outboard, was designed to turn the wheels of a vehicle.

besides, a 540 in that boat will make him poop his pants, best he keeps the training wheels on that Cheyenne with a small block

This is something else I don't completely understand.  There is no modern big block from GM so why do people call the LSx platform a small block?  There are 502+ Cu In LSx motors out there so it's not a Cu In thing.  I guess these are the same people who think Pontiac made a big block and a small block.

Not calling you out John.  You were just the latest to say this.

Pretty sure this motor was broke by the thieves that stole the Vette it came out of. Probably filled the tank with regular unleaded and drove the piss out of the 11:1 motor with the knock sensors going crazy.

I was making warm up passes when it came apart. It never saw over 3,200 rpm or even close to full throttle. That not a car motor in a boat problem, that's a broken motor to begin with problem. It probably had a cracked piston from detonation if it was getting ragged out with cheap gas.

ok smallish block, medium block,i.e. not a big block gm last big block was a 8100 and they cut those out back in 2006 i think, must sold off the tooling to mercruiser cause they are the 496 and the 496 HO....., ive got nothing against them (LSX),the one in the camaro halls a$$, they are just a new motor design creates in a era of cost cutting.....i just dont think they can hold up to the abuse, and you have to finesse the heck out that motor to get the same power out of a larger cube big block on a mild to medium build.

my father in law has a 454 hardcore crate motor in his 72 camaro.......its still a small block and even though it will cream most big blocks, it at the upper limits of the design.

you hit the nail on the head there.

also blaze your running the exhaust dry aren't you? are you not worried about the pipes getting hot and discoloring/melting/cracking the fiberglass on the transom?

The stock motor in a ZR1 Vette or Camaro is a 427 LSX, while the little 4.8 in Ken Sr's truck is a 292. Same basic block design in both from the factory. Standard decks can go up to a 454, tall decks have gone well over 500.

GM now sells a LSX 454 crate motor advertised as GM's most powerful crate motor ever, and makes 770 out of the box. GM's entire crate motor line up.

Pipes are plenty far enough away from the gel. Tom has his closer with a turbo on it. They yellowed first time out. Gonna have to get them jet hot coated.
