Look closely at that timing chain.  It is one of the chains with seams.  I have never liked or trusted those.  You may have to do a little digging to find one with seamless rollers.  I ended up with a seamless true roller from Melling in mine.  Just one of those pieces that you might want to take a second look at while it is easy to get to.  If nothing else ET will probably have a seamless chain in stock.

Here is the thread from when I was building mine.

And a pic of my old chain.  Cliff's has the same seams.

I have to chime in here.

I have never, in my life, been so blessed with the top notch quality friends I have here helping me with this motor. Words cannot express how grateful I am (not being gay at all. Lol. ).

Hope to be on the water on Sunday and ready for broken bow next Wednesday.

You can put your A$$ kisser away.  They are only helping because they are tired of listening to you mope about being in the whaler all season.  LOL.

(J/K Bro.  You have a great group helping you on this one.)

Bro, we'll forgo the lake tomorrow night if there is work to be done to get it on the water. Of course, if we get to a point where we are stuck like today, adios amigo... I'm off to the lake! LOL

Is that chain you have at the house a true roller Cliff? It will take all of a minute to change it at this point. Then again, there's probably only about 20 million double roller chains in use on the street. I'd be comfortable with one on a mild performance engine. I've never heard of one coming apart. Perhaps some other Ford guys can chime in.

What did you pay for that other chain? A true roller should run you about $90 to $125 where a nice double roller will run about $50.

Probably right.  Just worth spending a couple minutes to research in case others have had issue with them. Not sure I agree with that theory on the rod bolts.  If they are suspect just replace them and be done with it.  Just my .02

EDIT:  Just thought I should clarify a little on the rod bolts.  You had one of the most knowledgeable Ford guys (If not the most knowledgeable) in our group torque those bolts.  He said "If it was my motor I would not run those."  That would be enough for me to replace them without question.  If I had felt and seen what Bobby described in anything I was assembling, Those bolts would be replaced as well.  A failed rod bolt will be very detrimental to a lot of parts.  Just not a chance I would take at this point in the game.  We all know how opinionated I am.  I'll keep my mouth shut about it now.  Just had to get that off my chest.

just for fyi......I trust a stock, nylon lined, non-roller chain to that setup. A lot of people that ran the old stockers ran the plastic top gear...(nylon) to keep cam hamonics from causing unwanted vibs......as long as the bottom gear wasn't retarded. (and these motors came apart every year), I don't like any seamed "roller" set. I have seen them fail. But after seeing half the rods in backwards.....(damn) and seeing that chain....idk....good job, James, and stay on it. Cliff needs a good, reliable, long duration motor. clap.gif

The timing set in it now is the one that came out. You can tell it's not old at all. Cliff has another at home. He's knows where to leave it in the morning if he wants me to put it in. Like I said, it would take about a minute to install it at this point.

Did you check the oil galley plugs at the front of the block?  they are different than the standard flat plugs, they have a conical shape to help direct oil at the front lifter galleys...very crucial on the 460 Ford.  Cliff....did you actually pay for this shoddy assembly?

Yep, that motor was a train wreck waiting to happen!

Thanks for the heads up. I'll double check that when I change the timing set. Cliff's going to run his solid roller set by the shop this morning.

I have a few extra minutes so I decided to update this thread with some "non clickable" pictures from the past few days.

This was taken Monday evening 6/25/2012 getting the motor ready for an initial install. Notice these two Chevy knuckleheads (Blazeracer and BoatlessBrett)?? They're making a feeble attempt of trying to tear up a Ford with a hammer an a drill.

And here's someone who appreciates a Ford.

Installed and ready for the ride to blazes shop in Rowlett

Here's a shot in Blazes shop with Blaze and Motor head reassembling the motor on Tuesday 6/26/2012.

This is the full roller timing chain James install this morning.

Please give more detail on this, I am very interested as the first Engine (Built by some unknown shop) in my sled kept grinding the second lobe off.

It's in the back of the F250 James. Thanks man.

It's now installed with the timing cover bead blasted, wire brushed and clear coated. Heads are back on. Blasted the paint off, parts washed and re-oiled all the head bolts before putting them back in and torquing to 140!! Ugh... Looking for the lifter adjusting process now.

The tapered plug MUST go in the left side plug hole facing the front of the engine. Most people put them in both.

The flat plug will restrict oil flow.

You might be onto something there.

Got it all in and the motor would barely turn over. It popped off a couple of times, but the starter had a little smoke coming off if it. We pulled the dizzy cap and plug number one to verify timing and heard a terrible screaching noise. The first thing that popped in my head was maybe an oil ring jammed in sideways. Pulled the starter, which was very hot, and sure as poop the bendix was still out. Fortunately no starter, no screech, and the timing was good. A little retarded, but good. Unfortunately, upon closer inspection, the starter seems to be pile of rust. The motor feels like it should turning by hand with the plugs in.
