it's becuase you don't have to build them that often. Do it rite and do it once! :smile16:

If you dont take them apart that often why did they feel it was necessary to label the parts  think.gif crazy.gif
I guess they felt it was a gentleman's duty to do it rite. Don't just hand a man a mix bag o crap and expect him to make it run! think.gif That's my guess anyway! :smile16:

If it was a Chevy they wouldn't expect you to have to tear it down , so there is no need to label the parts . Besides , if you are smart enough to buy a Chevy in the first place you are smart enough to put everything back where it belongs .

How many models would be assembled rite with out directions and labeled pieces. I believe its called customer service, that way if the customer is inconvenienced by having to work on it, the manufacturer helps out by labeling chit. Ford Quality is job #1! Keep up the good ribbing guys! It gives me something to do. But this is Crusader's thread and he don't need it cluttered with Pro Government Motors propaganda! :smile16:

I got one of each sitting right next to each other here on stands, a blue oval and a bowtie.... neither were made in Japan.

We made more progress during the tear down tonight. I can say that without a doubt, this is a 460 motor and not a stroker. Below is a photo of the piston travel. As you can see the piston only goes down less that 4 inches (normal 460 stroke length is 3.85 inches) which removes all doubt about my motors displacement. My THB signature line has been adjusted to accurately reflect what I'm running.

Believe it or not, I think my daughter is a mini gear head. Those of you who were at Tawakoni last October saw her covered head to toe in mud so we all know this girl ain't afraid to get dirty. She was actually a big help to us, as you can see below.

Helping to loosen the end caps.

More than happy to hold one of the pistons.

Jacob got tired of us razzing him about a girl tearing down an engine while he plays on the stupid iPod so he decided to get his hands dirty too.

Though she didn't need any instruction from big brother, he offered it up anyway. Lol.

Not sure if this piston is any good. The machinist will let us know.

Cliff that one piston needs to be replaced.  Looks like an oil ring wasn't installed properly and it got bent over causing the scoring.  Man those guys must have been in a hurry to put that thing together to force it like that or they just didn't care.  I had that happen to me once on a motorcycle motor that thing was a biotch to get together and I never did get ti together because it should go together that hard hard I knew something was wrong and tore it back apart and found the oil ring bent over.
By the way was that the cylinder that had the lowest compression?

That's really cool, I always like having my daughter help me work on stuff. Mine has done lots of wrenching on the motor for the boat, and helped with alot of the prep work for the paint.

I had that happen on the motor I just put together. It didn't feel right going in. Pulled it back out and sure as poop, a bent over oil ring.

Hey man, as of now Sunday's weather looks to be a bust. If you want to come to the shop and use the bead blaster I'll probably be there working on mine.

That's funny with Skylar. As of today she officially knows more about motors than you!! LOLOL

Did you notice if the rods have the football bolts? It looks like they are in the pic with Skylar holding that piston and rod. That would mean you have the good heavy duty truck rods, also stock for a boat motor.

James, I have no idea whether "Football" bolts were used or not......  I meant to take a picture of the numbers on the rods but forgot to.

Skylar had a blast working on the motor....i was really surprised.....and proud of her too.

Bead blaster on Sunday sounds promising.....we'd have to get there around 11am as we have football practice at 430pm that day.

BTW Cliff just wondering what a Torque wrench is there being used for, since your tearing down you don't need to be torquing anything down yet.  Torque wrenches should never be used to break torque on bolts as that can cause the torque wrench to get out of spec.  A breaker bar should always be used to break torque on bolts.

CJ, it is simply a tool in the mans shop..........we were not using it to break anything loose.
Good deal.  Hate to see good money being thrown away by having to calibrate a good torque wrench being used for the wrong purpose.  Wasn't getting after you either just was wondering since there was a socket on it and it was next to the rods figured it was getting used in the teardown.  Then of course had to make my statement for anyone who didn't know.

Brian built his first motor at 8 years old.....un-supervised....and building blower motors for his dad when he was 12. He is also now a mechanic by trade....I'm sure he would never use a torque wrench for a tear down.....lol.
