I have a busted torque wrench with a 3/8 drive that makes a great breaker bar. I use it for that all the time since I can't torque with it. It's longer than a real 3/8 drive breaker bar too!

Brian built his first motor at 8 years old.....un-supervised....and building blower motors for his dad when he was 12. He is also now a mechanic by trade....I'm sure he would never use a torque wrench for a tear down.....lol.
I am sure he wasn't then.  I can remember those days helped rebuild my first motor at 7 it was a Vega GT.  Literally drop that car up the wall one day.  Dad had me steering it while he was towing it caught the edge of the house with the left front tire and the car was climbing the wall dukes of hazzard style with two wheels off the ground.

I have an old worn out 1/2" torque wrench I left with my dad to use as he sees fit too.  Now my good mac torque wrench no way.  Although both he and I have breaker bars too.  I also have an assortment of pipes to extend that breaker bar.  I have busted a breaker bar once too.  I also have a 3/8" inch pounds torque wrench (instead of foot pounds) for doing trannys but hardly use that anymore because I have learned to gauge that torque with pretty good accuracy just in the tension in my hand.

DOH!! I started this thread, but he doomed it when he said he would be back on the water by May 1st. Ain't no fricken way that's happening just cause he said it regardless of what is or is not found.

CJ, it is simply a tool in the mans shop..........we were not using it to break anything loose.
Good deal.  Hate to see good money being thrown away by having to calibrate a good torque wrench being used for the wrong purpose.  Wasn't getting after you either just was wondering since there was a socket on it and it was next to the rods figured it was getting used in the teardown.  Then of course had to make my statement for anyone who didn't know.

heh we do that all the time here at work.. but there again they usually dont last but about 3 months and then we buy a new one..  think.gif i wish i had that kind of money to buy a half in torque wrench that is 4 ft in length...  :smile13:

Keep looking in Pawn Shops.  Found one for 65.00, offered him 45.00 and out the door it went.  Was a Snap-on.

I'll go ahead and spill the beans. I have saturated stringers where the motor mounts to them. Looks like I have to replace the stringers and floor this week. The good news is I have a buddy here in McKinney with a shop full of woodworking tools, an abundance of fiberglass matting and a ton of experience replacing boat stringers and floors. All he wants in return for helping me is a ton of beer!! Lol, can't beat that.

I'll start the tear down / out this week.

That's a good alternative plan Matt but I do have a backup plan that might be a little cheaper that'll still get me on the water. In fact, my plan "B" is........the Boston Whaler!!

I could be on the lake this afternoon if I wanted too.

The Whaler worked for us for many years before the Crusader came in and stole the show.....she'll work fine for the next few weeks while the Crusader gets nursed back to health.

Ya, you're right Steve. After the Crusader is finished I'll have been through literally every inch of that boat and will be more confident in her ability while performing covert ops at 0100 in the morning on the lake.

I completely restored the Whaler and rebuilt its motor myself....so I'll know the Crusader as well as I know the Whaler.

It's all good stuff!!

Though minor in the grand scheme of things, I managed to clean up the intake. Here's a few pictures.

This is what it looked like before starting to clean it up using James' sand blaster.

Here's after sandblasting it and using the wire wheel to shine it up.
