Ok before all you guys give me a rash of shyte i am looking for some real info on my 496.
I know there are many variables to a motor combo but lets say the motor has everything I was told it did on the inside and it is all good and reusable. I have a 496 BBC that seems tight. Has a steel crank Beam rods solid roller do not know lift or piston type. The motor so say is running 11.0:1 CR. What would it take to make an 800 ish HP pump gas motor or is this even possible? I would say crank rods and pistons could stay I am sure new heads and cam would be in order and if this could happen what would be the best route to take to get there?
I am thinking about working it over and keeping it in the TX.
If pump gas is not an option then Race Fuel it is as this boat will not be the everyday driver. just would be nice not to have to carrying fuel around.

what length are the rods? skirts on those piston skirts probably have taken a beating if there stock length, and what was the combustion chamber size with it a 11 : 1?
800 hp may be a little high for that displacement and still run pump gas, well built pump gas 496 youll probably be in the ballpark of 550-600 Hp

I think they are 6" not 100% on that.

I have a new 496 in my 1969 Nova.Scat crank H beam rods KB forged pistons, 612 lift hyd roller cam, Edlebrock 100cc aluminum heads, 11.5 to 1 compression,it dynoed 618 HP.Can not run strait 93 octane pump gas in it alone. I run 93 octane gas & 8 oz. of Toluene per 10 gallons of gas.Timing is @ 38 deg. total

To get 800 Hp , I think you will need race fuel for sure , higher compression ,, good heads , good cam for a Natural Apirated engine to make close to 800 HP .

Blower engine will be easier to get 800 HP on pump gas ..

My 516 Merlin Tall deck 10.5 to 1 motor . 4.00 stroke crank with .400 longer rods, with Dart Pro One heads with a lot of port work , 760 lift solid roller , Dart intake and a 1150 dominator , I am making around 700 HP on pump gas .

IMHO to make 800HP on pump gas you'll need to drop compression add a blower and possibly better heads and a cam.

I do think you can run 11:1 on pump gas if it's tuned right and your running a cam with some overlap but typically I see 540-565 stuff making 800HP on pump gas so I think realistically your looking closer to 650-700HP running good heads like AFR 315Ccnc'd.

Thanks for all the information guys :smile15: :smile15: :smile15:
looks like i will shoot for high 6's low 7's and go from there.
I do not want a blower motor well i do but my wrench turning skills are very limted and they seem like to much tuning to keep them happy and i do not have the know how for that.
Guess i will pull the 496 next week and get it to the machine shop for the once over :smile15:

Stu I had a DYERS blower on a 32 ford with 2x4's back in the 80's and had no maintaince issues with it.I told Dyers what motor  I had and they even set up the carbs before the shipped them.Talk about bolt on on horse power it was scary . :smile17:

I can't see you getting to 800 NA without Race or Av gas. If you could get their, it wouldn't stay together long. That's not to far off from 2 hp per Cubic inch which NA is going to be a tall order. A friend of mine has a 496 pulling 1100 but he's got two RayJay's sitting on top of it.

AV gas not an issue just do not want to drop 8-10 bucks a gallon on fuel
Gonna have to look long and hard at what i want versus cost to operate.

I'm turning a ss 'A' 5750 on a conservative tune up.  AV gas.  That's somewhere around 700.  Stu, if want the exact specs give me a call.
