A pump with a view

Added a window to my bowl tonight.  Happened at WOT.  GPS said 58.4 MPH on that pass.  As you can imagine it shut down pretty quickly.  The boat actually made it back to the trailer on plane.  Tom @ Jet Boat Performance already has me taken care of. New bowl is on the way.  That is customer service.

The Poncho has too much HP.  That is my story and I'm sticking to it.  LOL.

The impeller is intact.  It is stainless.  I was making a WOT pass.  I was too far from the bank for it to be a rock that went through it.  There is no other damage.  I did not see anything floating in the water.  It just quit pulling all at once.  Maybe a turtle or a beer bottle but I did not find any remnants of anything in the pump.  The casting is really thin on the top of the hole.  My guess is core shift left a thin spot in the bowl when it was cast.  After 37 years of abuse it finally failed.

It will actually be back on the water before the bowl shows up.  Later today the pump is coming out of both boats.  The cruiser already has an energized YJ with a hydraulic diverter.  That pump will be going in the Rebel.  When the new bowl shows up I will put the Rebel pump back together and put it in the cruiser.  It's been the plan to swap these pumps for a while.  Now seems like a great time to do it.  LOL.

Pump is out of the Rebel.  Took a total of 29 minutes including putting the tools away.  I love my 3/8 Snap-On impact.  LOL.  I don't see any evidence of anything foreign going through the pump.  The only thing I see that may have happened is the casting is extremely thin for about 1/2 the perimeter of the blow out.  I am convinced it was just years of fatigue and a weak spot in the casting.  Either that or the wicked power of the Pontiac 400.  :smile30:

I've heard of people inspecting their bowl for cracks, I guess that is why. think.gif

Both pumps are out.  Cruiser took about an hour.  It's too tall for me to reach over the transom from the ground and it was a little more involved with the diverter.  Probably clean it up later tonight and back into the Rebel tomorrow.

Pump is back int he Rebel.  I still have a couple things to finalize after it is tested.  I did not want to move the hydraulics and electrical for the diverter until I was sure this pump was going to work well in the Rebel.  I rigged up a turnbuckle so I have a manual adjustment.  I can manually adjust it from full up to full down or anywhere in the middle.  The first attempt did not work.  The top of the eye bolt would not fit the mount.  I replaced that eye bolt with a thumb screw and solved the problem.  The FWD/REV lever is backwards.  I am not real pleased with the FWD/REV cable routing.  Other than that it is complete.  Non of these things will keep me from the lake tomorrow though.
