Alright CJ.. There's gonna be a lot of people thinking this project will never get done... prove them wrong.. if not you will be banned from THB for life....LOL  good luck and get-r-done.....

Drum Agreed this one I think will be easier to get done.  Kinda worried about the steering now though.  looks like it might cost more than the boat to repair or I change it out for a newer style and keep the original to reinstall later.

It'll cost you a couple hundred to get the steering system totally rebuilt.  If you're not willing to spend that, find a different hobby.   Seriously though, don't skimp here.

I know that I looked at replacement cost from Rex at 800+ and was wondering.  I read up on the steering and knew about the set screw thanks for bringing it up though.  My worry is the cables are frozen.  I'll find out I guess.  I'm figuring a rack n pinion would cost me around 150 if I can get this one rebuilt for that or a little more and it be original I'll probably do that.  I appreciate the advice everyone.

I keep looking at the boat and swear I saw it way back in 60's??? lived in Abilene then............

just do not cut corners and restore it safely.  Your safety worth much more then the dollars.  Hope to see it on water one day soon. By all means be sure it had prop release..................

without a prop release very ill handling and not very safe.  You mentioned steering, I recall way back I rebuilt steering on Hondo.  turn it left and it went right, turn it right and it went left........... I said hell I can whip this............ all worked good until reflexes took over at speeds around 80 .  nearly crashed it and put on trailer ASAP..........

Good luck on rebuild and look forward to seeing it run on water once more.

Putting the Chrysler in it is what gets expensive. Plates, bellhousing, flex plate, cooling system parts. Headers I had custom built but you can flip a set of car headers upside down to get by. Start looking for your plates now. If you need them I may be able to track a set down. I had some located before, but turned it over to JJ instead. (best decision I could of made, but a lot of work and labor on his part. I had a custom v-drive oil pan made by Charlie Gilbertson. External pickup. Let me know what you have and need on the Chrysler install.

this is a cargo steering system there are no pulleys in the cable system.  The cables are sleeved and under tension.

Galen I will probably hit you up to make sure I get everything I need.  I have some aluminum plate and planned to make my motor plates like I used to do when I was racing cars.  I have some water pumps to use.  I have a set of headers I was going to flip to use for now.  I understand using the Chrysler motor is the challenge but that was the whole point of this since it was originally a Chrysler motor.

Throw the chrystler jet in the trash, chaulk it up to learning and experience, focus on the better boat.

I will get them both done.  The Carlson will be for when it's just me out for some fun and the CJ when the family all want to go.

Okay so I am going to clear coat this thing this weekend before it deteriorates further.  I am trying to figure out whether to just leave on the trim and tape it off or remove all the trim and have to seal with putting it all back on.  I am removing the steering wheel, windshield, tank vents.  I am jut not sure I want to drill out all those rivets on that fragile aluminum trim.  Already have a small piece that needs to be repaired and put back on.

Thoughts?

Just tape it off! If you remove it, it mite never get put back on. Keep all the parts together if you catch my drift! :smile30:

That's my thoughts for now my main goal is to get this thing protected it has been unprotected for so long.  I am more worried about breaking the trim taking it off.  once all the hardware is out of it will pull it off the trailer and flip it and clearcoat the bottom as well.  Then the trailer can redone.  I already have all the wood I need for the trailer.  I really only have 3 things that may hold me up on this project, the steering, the Casale drive and the motor.  I can put some cushions on the seats and run it that way if need be.

He tore out the floor and stringers in the last boat and bought stuff for it.....then he stalled, built a porch and got him a GF.
