Winterizing boat

The weather says close to freezing later in the week. Has anybody started winterizing?  I kept holding out hoping I could get another day on the water. That's probably unrealistic.  I guess I'm going to fill the motor with antifreeze, add some stabil to the tanks and pull the batteries. Anything else I should do?

Only other thing I did was fog mine with fogging oil.  The cruiser is already done.  I did not do the Rebel since I plan to pull the motor this winter and it is in the garage.

fog the cylinders...Could just hang a drop light in the engine compartment if you are want to try to get another day or two on the water.

Last Saturday I pumped antifreeze into the motor, loosened up the distributor cap to keep moisture from building up and corroding the contacts and pulled the batteries. My boat is in a storage shed with no electricity at all. My batteries are now charged up and in the garage on some wood.

Not familiar with "fogging" please explain. Also Jim, I did that last year and the damn droplight fell and was laying on the battery. I have a nice bulb shape melted into battery case now. I'm glad I caught it when I did.

A can of fogging oil and the instructions are on the can, I think you can get it at any auto parts house.

Don't use WD-40.  It is not a rust inhibitor.  Like Jim said, use fogging oil.  It comes in a spray can.  You start the motor and spray it down the carb while it is running.  It will coat the cylinders, valves and runners nicely to prevent rust and corrosion.  If you want to go the extra mile you can pull the plugs after and spray a little more in each cylinder.  West Marine is where I got the last can I bought.

I just got back fm autozone and they told me to use stabil to fog the cylinders. Lol. They don't carry fogging oil so don't waste your time looking for it there. Go to a real autoparts store like Napa.

You ever pulled the plug on a motor with bad rings?  It will be coated with oil.  The fogging oil will burn off rapidly next spring when you fire it up.  The key is not to run it after you fog it.  The can will have instructions on it.

Seems like I ran into that last year.  That's why I ended up at West marine.  I'm not even sure if NAPA has it anymore.

I have a spray can that i can put compressed air to and fog the engine with trans oil. Smokes like hell on the first fire in the spring but havent ever had any problems. As far as antifreeze i just drain the block on both sides.

the engine holds more water than you think. I used 3 gallons and barely had pink coming out the exhaust. I'm sure it will be plenty. Not like were getting a hard freeze.

Was sad though, makes me thing no more lake until March  :smile18:
