Anybody around here know anything about older Volkswagens, as in dunebuggys/sandrails? Saw one pretty cheap & thought about pickin it up to drive back & forth to work, figured a vw oughta get pretty good mileage.

Anything in particular to look out for? Thanks.

ESA knows Vdubs.

If you've stayed at a Holiday Inn express lately, you shouldn't have a difficult time working on it!!!

Lol.

You can do an engine swap on one of those things in about an hour.

Yeah, doesn't seem to be much to them. Been looking around at different ones to kinda compare pricing & a lot of them all mention having the bus transmission. Guess it is a stronger unit than the standard bug transmission or something.

Got a friend here that has a Volkswagen shop was gonna call as well, but haven't talked to Richard in awhile so I will see what that old buzzard has to say, lol.

Thats pretty sweet, there was one on Counting Cars the other day looked real similar to that one. Black top instead of white and slot mags for the win...

well if you are working on them, what is your opinion of them. would you have one for yourself, are they finicky, easy to get parts for, etc...

well I guess after typing that, just cuz you are working on it, don't necessarily mean you know wtf you doin with it, lol...  :cheesy:

I have driven and worked on a couple in the past! I like them because they are fun and no frills. Simple and cheap transportation! :smile16:

They are alot of fun and easy to work on. Virtually everything from engines to fenders, trim etc are still reproduced. I used to race a class 5 Baja in Cali and trust me they take a beating. I am currently going through a 60 Karman Ghia with dual port 1600, going the Cal look route. Pick up a copy of Hot VW's and see what they are doing with them. Pretty amazing, latest issue has a dual turboed sand rail that's putting out over 700 hp.

Thanks Jimbo! this deal I'm lookin at is a rail, so no veedub body parts tp speak of, but am assuming all the suspension & running gear is still veedub hardware. Appears to be street legal, or close to it. I live 4 miles away from work, so was thinkin it would be good on gas & a fun little rig to hit some trails with should the situation arise.

lol I hear ya.. kinda surprised that my wife is on board with maybe getting this thing. it was her that actually suggested stopping to look at it. I was at first kinda "ehhh, don't have any use for that" but after checkin it out & with such a short drive to work, it may be decent alternative to the thirsty truck I'm driving now. plus it looks pretty cool, just needs wider rims/tires on the back, its got pizza cutters all the way around. :lipsrsealed: :cheesy:

Yeah , I bet that 4 mile drive in the truck is eating you alive in fuel prices  think.gif You can probably pay for the rail with what you save on gas  :smile13:
