Undersize Impellers

I'm sure its more of a casting flaw issue, the impellers probably would not machine up perfectly true at standard size so they went an extra .010 to .015 to get them trued up.  Nothing wrong with them as long as you don't mind running the undersized wear ring. It will work fine

I got ya... One of my plans this fall/winter is to get the pump apart & see what kind of shape its in. It seems ok, but I have no knowledge of what condition it may be in from any previous owners. Its on its 4th season with me & so far I haven't done anything to it other than grease it & top the oil off every now & then.

Thanks for the info....

i would agree also,  but would hate to tear something up not having a look see,  i'm pretty sure the problem is in the impellar and wear ring  :smile14:

oh and the bowl gasket looks like it is trying to blow out,  and water getting into the oil,  me don't like that.

Bowl gasket isn't gonna fix that... I agree with the others, I wouldn't fool with it for one more outing, if you're just gonna take it apart afterwards anyway... I'd top off the oil & call it good if it were mine.

If the water is getting into the bowl, I would consider putting some Lucas oil treatment in it. I think it would stick around a little longer. According to the web, the water really won't hurt it as long as some oil is present, and you don't let it remain there all winter. Hopefully it won't be up to you and me to represent the South and our hardware! :smile16: :smile16:

This is how it was told to me when I asked about them:

i likes me a stuffer...  they work kenny, the bowl fills faster when ya mash the go pedal. some guys say they can't tell, i say they don't know their boat very well. gotta be a reason the fastest boats in the country are runnin stuffers

I figure I'll get one, damn sure can't hurt...

Water in the bowl bushing area is not going to hurt anything as long as it is in the water, dominator bowls are water lubricated, the problem with water getting in to a berk bowl is that sand tends to get in with it and cant get out causing shaft wear and bushing wear to be accelerated. I would change bushings and seal at LEAST every 2 to 3 seasons and run NO heavier than 90 wt gear lube, I suggest around a 50 wt oil and no grease unless the seal has a snap ring. Undersize impellers are fine to an extent, kinda like a brake rotor ( not really) but you can get replacement WRs down to .060" under but you need to be aware of how much material is left on your particular piece and how strong it will be and if you are willing to risk your life, pump, motor and boat on it, just saying KDUB

Stuffers dont actually stuff anything, the idea is to tighten the clearance between the bowl and the back of the impeller and smoothe transition of water as it changes direction coming off the impeller and into the bowl. Correct fitment of the impeller to bowl (vane to vane) is key. that is one of the greatest inneficiencies i see in pumps is improper clearances ( no blueprint). Just my .02 KDUB

Good call Slo , suspect this is very likely the case (although we're not a Berk oem) Contrary to what one might think ,due to variences in machinery and operators not everything comes out as planned (machining)  Berk has likley "cleaned" these up and is offering them as a budget alternative for folks We remachine several Impellers a season to undersizes for various reasons , nothing wrong with this unless the undersize gets below .025 (IMO) That said if anyone needs and impeller and is to the piont where a few bucks makes the difference , give us a call we'll always "work" with you Guys Tom
