I saw a 455 Poncho on CL recently. Here it is.... Not a 400 though so you gotta change rotating assembly, right?

I should be able to find a bare block for $100 or less.  Just gotta keep looking.

I hear ya.  For the moment it makes more sense to build another Pontiac.  That may change once I get my motor disassembled though.  Could be more damage yet to be found.

Completely disassemble it and look for any visible issues with the rotating assembly.

It is.  Only problem is that block is .060.  My pistons are .040.  I am talking to him though.  It may be cheaper to buy a new set of pistons than to have another block machined.

If you find a good std bore 400 block....usually $10-12 a hole to bore....than you have cam bearings, freeze plugs, vat block etc...

Blaines did my 460 block. Hot tanked and magnafluxed, bored .030 over, line honed, new freeze plugs and cam bearings installed along with all new oil galley plugs!!

$300 out the door....

If you can score the original bore block, $300 will get it like new to fit what you have.

Just called Blaines, they don't have any Ponchos now, but then they do a short block is $660 assembled, plus $200 core. Probably NOT preformance oriented parts though.

I think you should go with a twin turbo LSX sucking on a 400 shot of NOS...

oops didn't notice pick up only,  still, not a bad starting price with only 1 day left on a standard bore short block. I'll keep looking  :smile24:

The pistons are JE NHRA 30420.  They are custom ordered.  After a looking back at the previous owners post I believe they are .030 over.  All JE website says is they are available in sizes up to +.070.  If I can't find a marking I'll measure them.

The rotating assembly looks to be in good shape.  I have no idea how this thing stayed together. The damage to the block was worse than what I originally saw  It has two mains that were cracked all the way through and one that had started to crack but was not all the way through yet.  We pulled the two pieces out of the block by hand once the crank was out.

Thanks to Cliff for helping me tear it down.  The hunt is on for a bare block.

Thanks.  I saw them.  Some of them I have contacted. Some of them I am waiting to hear back from.  Some are just flat too far away or too expensive.  The right one is out there somewhere.
