Starter issue

Pulled my starter tonight.  I managed to get it out without lifting the motor.

First I found this:

Then I found this in the bottom of the boat:

I guess I found the issue LOL.  Looks like the snap ring snapped.  Gonna try to find a pinion gear and solenoid rebuild kit local tomorrow.

See the nose on that starter? That's like the one I have.  You can fix that one way cheaper than buy one from me, unless you want a spare.  Let me know.

I called IMI and have a snap ring, spring and washer on the way no charge.  I stopped by Hammond this afternoon and they had the parts there for $5.  It's back together and seems fine.  Usually there is a reason the pinion comes off though.  I am going to send pics of the pattern to IMI tomorrow and see what they have to say about it.

maybe needs to be clocked different ?

Clocking it does not change the relation of the pinion to the flywheel.  It only changes to position of the motor for clearance around headers, block etc...  Matt at IMI is sending a shim to go between the starter and the billet mount.  This is not the shim that goes between the starter and the engine block. I have some of those.  He said the tooth contact looks fine it just looks like the pinion is a little "deep" into the fly wheel (meaning when it is disengaged it is still a little too close to the flywheel).  BTW, I'd buy a mini from IMI - Hi Torque any day.  They have helped with this no questions asked.  They shipped replacement parts and shims at no charge.  This starter came with the pile of parts I got when I picked the boat up.  It is at least 6 years old even though it has only been used for 1.5 summers.
