Pump set back

Can someone tell me the advantage or reason to set the pump back? I've seen many done that way,and many not. Why?  think.gif

What Boat, what bottom, what/how much power,what jet, lots of details if you can , not all boats/hulls,jets will "like" or can benefit from a jet set back in fact in some applications it can create problems and hurt overall performance  Tom

The hull is a Centurion pickle fork. 19 foot I believe. Plan to run about 500hp BBC Aluminum heads,steel block. Getting ready to do a complete hull redo. This will be my first jet,so was unsure. I'd rather do it while I was doing the hull.

Has the bottom had any work and do you know what intake ?

Man did you nail it ! actually I have the same boat and have been doing some research into it , these Centurions differ from alot of similar boats and I'm told take bottom (keel work) to make them work more in a bit gotta get the doors open

hey sputnic, not to thread jack but the answer to your original question as to why pumps are set back is the water will break right before the intake, and the farther you can set it back the less riding surface of the hull you will have which will give us what we all love.[more speed]. just keep in mind that race boats and lake boats will differ in the fact that a race boat can usually handle more set back, because they normally run in ideal water conditions and the structural integrity of the transom is not so important. just my two cents  mike

TAKE IT TO LIBERATOR BOAT  AND LET DAVE PUT YOU PUT YOU A KEEL ON IT. MOVE THE PUMP ALL THE WAY BACK. I DID A CENTURION WAY BACK AND DIDNT DROP THE KEEL AS FOR AS THE BOAT WANTED. 700 HP AND THE BOAT WAS HEAVY 800 OR 900 BEAR.

The Drop keel will help stabilize the boat and make it safer , most of those boats as I understand it were intended to run whackers not jets , I'm working on some info for you on set backs just want it to make sense and be "cojent" Tom 

BTW just built a jet for the Owner of Centurion a couple months back for a former famous raceboat called Hurry Round Hondo , he flew his Turbo prop to our local airport dropped off the jet then flew back to retrieve it and visited a bit...

I get the purpose of set back now. Is the work worth the performance gain? Is it necessary over a certain horsepower? If a drop keel is added,how much modification will have to be done to the trailer? It also defeats the shallow water bonus of a jet.

The bottom work (if you opted) is not such that it would effect your trailer or shallow running , require flipping the boat and alot of "grind, fill, glass and sand  attached is a pic of my Mach 1 (similar) and a Centurion  I'll try to see if I have some better pics of the bottom

I would say at some point its worth considering a different hull , because it costs a fair amount to do all that and boats are cheap right now .
