Pump grease?

I have a berk JG pump.  IT with the boat with a grease fitting installed on one side of the pump.  I have heard about adding oil to the pump but am I supposed to grease my pump instead?

I have heard of some people doing that, pumping the bowl full of grease. From what I have gathered, its gotten kind of mixed reviews, some guys say not to, some say its fine... I myself don't know of anybody that does. 80-90W gear oil is all I've ever run in mine (Berkeley).

Some of these guys around here that have done pump work may have a little better info?

I did a quick search on PB & found this thread on it: http://www.performanceboats.com/html/forums/showthread.php?t=53486&highlight=bowl+grease

Read through that & you'll see what I mean about the "good/bad" deal...

It is my opinion that either way is fine but if it has grease in it now and you don't want to pull the bowl off and clean out all of the grease just add grease till it is full don't add oil. Most everybody these days run oil because the oil does have a tendancy to lubricate better because it is easier for the oil to work its way into the bushings and it is easier to clean out of the bowl.
