ok i have all gotten all of the yellow sanded off of the boat.. and now im looking for a way to paint it.... i have access to a make shift paint booth with air and a roof hoist.... however, one of my friends suggested that since this is a toy boat, and gets knocked around withthe jet skis, and gets beached quite a bit.... would it be better to use an industrial type paint... such as Vansickle Tractor paint... and Roll it on.???  im not sure i need a show quality expensive finish... but i do want it to look smooth and consistant... Plus this boat will never see salt water.. so i dont see the need for high dollar marine paint.

So... Ok if i decide to use vansickle paint, and go ahead and get a white gallon. Could i just take it to a paint store and get whatever color i want added to it? Then prime it, sand, roll paint, color sand, clear, wet sand?

Well... I was 1/2 way serious... but, i found some lime green and purple gel coat.

so... should i use gel coat? I just want a hard durable surface. and not have it cost a million dollars.

how many galons of paint would it take to roll on a 16' boat?

spray the gelcoat out of a gun, if you roll it everybody will look at you like you are half brain-dead everytime you ride around with your bedliner textured boat. would take a gallon to spray it and 2 to roll it, because you reduce to spray and roll it thick. if you want cheap and durable, look up summit racing uerthane paint on ebay...it has the same durable properties as imron or any other urethane paint. and it is single stage, no clear.

damn, i was hoping to get away with having to spray... im not experienced in such things... i was hopingto be ableto roll it on smooth, and then sand it down.... but I dontwant bed liner texture.. that would suck!

so i guess summit paint it is. cuz there isno way im spending 400 bucks on 2 cans of gel coat lol.

ok so ive learned that Vansickle is not a good idea... the paint just simply does not flex enough for fiberglass and will crack off...
so.. im back to the gel coat or paint question... I have an acquaintance that sais the "roll and tip" method can be done on simple paint schemes... so im posting pics of my progress and a pic of what i am hoping to achieve to some degree.

Gel coat is 200 a gallon for 1 color. x2 = 400 at least
paint is 100 or less a gallon plus primer = 220 total    - summit racing car paint

WOW how do you get everything to sit sideways that way and not fall over?

Just joking with ya i know several people on here have use paint successfully and Blaze used tractor supply paint.

can i still roll and tip with the automotive paint?  ill prolly end up spraying 3 stage paint... just bc its easy to do... but just out of curiosisty.. can i use the summit paint and still roll it on? or is that limited to the thicker gel coat?

here is a rough draft of what im wanting to do.

but for longevity of boat life...wouldnt  a thick helping of gel coat be benificial to the ride? lol  Im just mostly concerned with the durability of the paint.. bc it will be beached, and it will rub against jetskiis

im gonna use paint regardless... i just want to have my facts straight.  paint is cheaper. and comes in any color i want.

also im thinking of installing a floor mount pylon right in front of the motor... any reason that this is a bad idea?

also budgeting in a hydrolic place diverter for my 12jc... is this a good idea on 16 foot boat?  dont really care about the roostertail, but want to stop spraying my skiier in the face, and trim down.

you can roll on the summit paint, all urethanes are very thick. but thicker paint is not more durable, urethane paint gets as hard as gelcoat, and because it is so hard it is prone to chipping more as you put it thicker as with any auto paint. if you roll it then it will not self level as well as spraying because it is so thick. its still going to look like stucco.

I would think you will spend enough money on extra paint to roll it on that you could just order a decent paint gun . You can probably borrow a compressor from a friend , just ask around . As far as it being durable , even gel coat boats can be trashed if you don't take care of them . Almost everyone here beaches thier boat , but we all still try to take good care of our boats . You keep saying that they get bumped with the jet skis , why is that ? If someone "bumped" my boat with a jetski I would kick thier ass , if someone "bumped" my boat with my jetski they would never be around my boat or jetski to get another chance to do it again . There is no reason that you can't enjoy your boat and jetskis without abusing them . As far as a ski pylon goes , I am not sure I would mount one in the floor unless I was replacing the floor and built in enough support under the floor for it . There are lots of other options on ski tows .

The vessels bump together mostly due to my own bad boat habbits... they all get beached close together and just get knocked around by waves, and wind. or if we are trading off riders in the water... there is always some physical contact...

However, i have access to the air compressor and the gun... i just wanted to explore my options....

and as far as the pylon goes... i want somthing that pulls from a higher vantage point than my transom.... so what would you do? so far the only options i have found are a floor mount pylon, or a universal wakeboard tower.


also.. i have a new concern... we pulled the seats out of the boat and pulled up the carpet... and there is movement in the floor where the seats were screwed in (not a floor, but screwed to the bottom of the boat"  feels like a "soft spot" and if you stand on the floor it moves up and down slightly..... is there a way to re-enforece this? or am i just boned? its the actual botom of the boat... not a wood floor.

If they are allowed to bump each other around then it really dont matter what you use , it will get scratched . Why not just leave it like it is and keep the money you would have spent on paint in your pocket ? It sounds like you dont really care if it stays nice anyway , so why waste the money on paint ? Maybe you could get someone to spray the whole boat and the jetskis down with bedliner material ? That should be strong enough that you can just let them bang against each other in the water all you want .

I guess since looks dont matter you could always build one of these with the money you save on the paint job
