Jet drive vs. V-drive

I a jet and a prop boat. Not a V Drive, or a wacker but an in/out Mercruiser....

You drive prop boats, you pilot a jet :smile30:

Jet boats have the cool factor, hands down. I ran my jet on Lake Austin, a yuppie wakeboarding ski boat mecca where people have way too much money. They all stopped to look at the 1969 model metal flake jet boat throwing the roost in the air. Anything else is an also ran... :smile16:

I still like the idea that to the untrained eye a V-dive boat with a big Chevy looks like it's sporting a Ford because the dizzy is on the wrong end. LOL

That may be the case for you Ford knuckleheads but trust me, the Chevy guys are a little smarter than the average Ford guy.  They know what a BBC looks like no matter what direction it is facing.  :smile28:

Love them all. Jet, v-drive, and out drive. V-drives are awesome. Kool and the old skool aspect unparalleled. Going back to BFF's and BFH's no comparison.  Chicks dig em.

Having owned flat bottoms, runner bottoms, hydro's, and jets I have some personal experience I'd like to share.  As far as safety, the most dangerous hull engine combination is a light layup with a high HP motor and a jack plate.  Your not driving anymore, your flying in a constant state of flux.  One slight miss calculation in ever changing conditions can cause catastrophe.

Flat bottom and runner bottoms are very good at low speed control. the ride is punishing, on any water that is not smooth as glass.  Too achieve the speeds these boats (the ones Ive owned) were built for, is hard work.  Almost as much as controlling a clamp-on out of the hole. Not enough down pedal and you could find the wet side up.

I'm not talking in this post about the ski vdrives, or the beautiful wood boats of years gone by.

Jets are the safest most forgiving ride of all the boats discussed.  That is, up to 90 mph, after that the game changes and the jet inherits some problems.  First, the sudden loss of power will lead to loss of steering, the nose will drop back into the water, and with the loss of torque the boat makes a hard turn.  One thing I learned early in my years driving boats, is don't make your full throttle pass INTO a cove, sometime you "think" you have more gas that you do.  Air trap hulls (tunnel) will fly.  The 18 degree semi-v is one of the best rides in the boating industry, from there the ride is rougher with the increase of a flat surface.
