Guys, I have had something on my mind for a while now...and I just have to say it. Call me nuts, or old, or whatever, but I have to say it.
The last few times I've been at river events, (not withstanding other events), I have had serious concerns with the high speed passes in the area that we all hang out.. before you go all nuts on me, let me finish.
How many of you have lost a coil or msd box, or lost fuel pressure while hammering it? Just that one time of losing power while under wot? On the river, there is nowhere to go..... Just sayin'....I have many videos of us...
I am just as guilty....but in a river setting, with adults and kids swimming in the area, and 1 little malfuntion can be disasterous.

Just throwing it out there.....I'm done now.

Well Duane, I'm glad you brought this up.  I agree with you 100%!  I don't have a problem with mid powered 'fly-bys' that are controlled and that a jet would have enough room to slow down without steering control before entering an area where swimmers are located or the river bends.  I think that starting off where everyone is at under full power wouldn't be a problem.  But still, if you're running a lot of HP, it's probably best to get away from everyone.  BTW, I know I'm guilty as well.  Safety first.  I would hope if someone is approached at one of our events and asked to take extra precaution, they won't take offense to it.  I know I enjoy everyone's company here and if I'm doing something that makes other people feel uncomfortable, I hope someone would let me know.  I sure hope everyone shares at least some of this point of view.

I couldn't agee more with what Duane has said. You know we get a bad rap alot of times and I woud sure hate to lose a member or anyone for that matter because of malfunction in a Hpower boat. I guess that is why to this day I fear my boat for I know that it could hurt me or anyone that might be riding with me. Play safe and everyone will have fun.

I've seen alot of guys making passes WELL over 100mph close enough to throw a rock at and hit them. Most of them wear life jackets atleast, but all it takes is one small thing to go wrong and then they end up turning into all the boats/people right at the shore. It's like bull riding..not if you get hurt, but when and how bad...

Just look at what happened at Plowmans last year. Though the boat was well in the middle of the river, it all happened in a brief instant.

Very good topic Duane.
At Plowman I try and not run with more than one boat next to me there . I fear what might happen if I loose a rudder , skag or prop.. When I bought my boat , the first run I lost the key that holds the tiller to the rudder and that was very interesting on the shut down .. Glad no one was to the left of the boat . It turned 90% to the left as soon as I let off the gas .

I try and just make solo runs and far enough away from the bank to not hit anyone if something does go bad .

Good point. But if we lead by example with proper boatmanship, who knows what kind of good will prevail. We can only control ourselves and no others.

These are all excellent points.  I trust everyone and their intentions but I do not always trust mechanical equipment, stuff breaks.  I do not think we can ever be too safe.  I feel if we see something not right we should approach the individual in freindship and express our concerns.  Anyone with snap will be open minded and see the concern.  I would hate to ruin a day, year, life.  My 2 cents.

Something else to think about...

Insurance will only go so far. Negligent operation is the just the perception of the jury in a courtroom and could cost you far more than a higher premium. Once State Farm or who ever has paid the liability portion of your policy, the rest is up to you. You could be working the rest of your life just to give it to someone else. Plus if it happens on federally controlled waters, the Coast Guard could get involved. Then it will be YOU vs the USA if criminal charges are filed then the civil portion would bankrupt you even more.

It just isn't worth it.

Yes Duane you are getting old! LOL nothing wrong with that at all man. Funny how age and wisdom go hand in hand. All of your points are very valid!  and like Billy was saying It Happens! I too had many problems when i first started running the blower motor,,cant tell you how many times the fire went out on the engine at wot until i figured out i had a venting problem on the fuel tanks. Lucky enough the old taylor went straight and true and no one was in front of me.

I see on FB one of our past members really objects to this and well I think he may have missed the point about high speed passes. I have seen videos of you guys on some narrow rivers with bends in them with swimmers in the water. I think that maybe what Duane was talking about. The.re are some rivers that are wide enough and straight enough to run as fast as you want. same goes for lakes. I know when I first got my boat I use to run up in the river here in Granbury. The river is narrow and has bends in the river. One guy was running his boat and engine failed , ran it up the bank, slipped back down and sank. So nothing wrong with running all out ,just make sure you are in the clear.
