Hardin Marine Exhaust log nuts loose

After about every other trip in the boat, I develop and exhaust leak and have to tighten the nuts holding the logs to the heads.

I'm running Hardin Marine logs on Ford D0VE heads. There are studs in the heads and the bolts that hold the logs on are 9/16 in size.

My question is this: what type fasteners are you guys using to hold your exhaust logs in place?? Are there nuts out there I could use so I can safety wire them in place?? What other fasteners can I use??

Thanks.

Anyone??

The PO used Locktite to hold the nuts in place. Doesn't work to well with a high heat application.

replace the studs with bolts and safety wire? Kinda hard to safety wire nuts... :smile28:

Double nut'em? crazy.gif

Ya, I thought about double nutting them but some studs are just long enough for one nut only.  I figured there might be some other fastener I could use.

Are your threads fine or course?  Most all drilled aviation nuts are fine thread.  Aviall or East Coast Aviation Supply will have the nuts.  You said 9/16.  Sounds too large.  Are you sure the studs aren't 3/8?

3/8 studs, 9/16 head.
And don't you have to drill the stud as well?  crazy.gif

In order to not have to type a whole lot.  A picture is worth a thousand words.  :smile30:

Well the nuts take a 9/16 wrench to turn them. Also, I though there were some nuts out there that can be safety wired as I too have worked on airplanes since 1984....and we safety wired nuts all the time.....so I know this "technique" of which you speak....lol. The threads on the studs are coarse and not fine

I have simple lockwashers on mine.

Mine have lock washers too as well at the locktite the PO applied to the stud threads

Here's a picture of the motor when the PO had the boat...mind you it looks much different now...but the exhuast log nuts are the same..

Crusader back when I was running a jet boat I had the same problem with that type of exhaust. I found that after you immediately get some heat on them torque them down and they never backed off. just my 2 cents.

Ahhh, okay...good idea. I'll try your technique next time out on the lake. Thanks.

You should read the "strange but true" stories on stage 8's website.  Pretty interesting stuff.
