Exhaust tips and Hose question

Yep there's a crapload of water flowing OUT through the exhaust hose ... did that last year with only a loose clamp and was flingin water with the flywheel in no time ! It looked like a giant azz hole in the boat the way water was flying everywhere .... got to the beach and shut it off water quit flyin all over so checked hoses and clamps and there ya go. I used that green stripe diesel truck fuel hose wasn't too expensive.

I had a 3" hose clamp on my exhaust go bad in the fall and had water leaking in....not a lot but enough to puddle in the bilge. Thanks to Brent......he just happened to have an extra clamp in his van. I replaced them all with new SS clamps and keep the old clamps in the boat with us.....just in case we have another, or someone else has a clamp failure.

It is recommended to use 2 hose clamps on all thru hull water hoses. One each way.

Yes, if you lose a hose clamp and an exhaust hose, you will get lots of water in your boat in a hurry!

I dont have flaps on my jet and once when killing the engine, it dieseled (ran backwards) sucked water in the exhaust and then would not turn over. Had to pull all the plugs and crank it over while floating around in the lake. Water shooting out of your spark plug holes is not a fun sight to see. At least I did not bend a rod.

The internal flappers went bad and Matt gave me some external flappers to clap onto my trumpets...they look okay but not cool...if you know what I mean.

As for the exhaust hose clamps...I have one clamp on the hose where the exhaust tip goes through the transom and one holding the hose onto the snail. Are you saying I should have two clamps in each of these areas?

Oh yes. Two in each end and when you put them on, make them opposite. US Coast Guard recommends it but does not have a regulation stating it, NMMA does and so does the ABYC and could lead to insurance issues if you boat does sink. Hoses not double clamped, claim denied....

Plus, with a hole that big underwater, I want peace of mind. jump.gif

Okay Red Horse, thank you very much for that advice. I'm defintely going to double clamp both ends of the exhaust hose for sure. Gotta be safe when I'm bringing my family with me.

Man...I wish there were a Knowledgable Coast Guard auxiliary near where I live...get them to do a full inspection.

More than likely they do. I get my boat checked by them. Google it and see what you come up with. They go from lake to lake.

They have never said anything about the thru hull...To get the safety vessel check sticker it is a big thing. They asked me rules of the road, radio operation, did I have one (yes I do), boater education, Type III, Type IV PFDs, regulations for accessibility. Lots of things.
I know I sound like the biggest nerd boater, I just like knowing the regulations. You really need to know them when you hit the big salty lakes! Dealing with ships that move at 30+mph and channel markers. I really love this hobby and know most of the regulations. Plus I dont like to be harassed by the water cops... once they see the CG Vessel Safety Check sticker, they go after someone else, everytime. And I want to make sure I am safe out there. Mother nature does not suffer fools very easily.

I'm with ya brother.....I'm a safety nut as well. After spending 21 years in the Navy and also three years as a water cop down in the Florida keys ('88-'91) I've seen a lot happen. I'm not as up to date with current regs as I once was. Lake operations are far more easier than salt water ops....and salt water ops is what I grew up doing having grown up in South Florida. We take our Boston Whaler down to Corpus Christi each spring and run the salt water waterways there.....and that's where we deal with the rule and regs of the water ways.

Ya, I sure would like to get one of those safety stickers. I'm also in the process of doing a Boater Safety course too....just to get the card and also be smart about things.

Glad to hear there's another safety conscious fella on the boards here......safety is a BIG deal.

Very cool red Horse. I just emailed an Examiner and requested a Vessel Safety check for both of our boats.

Thank you!!!

Here are the measurements and information concerning the new exhaust tips on the Crusader. I took several pictures and will attempt to describe what I have.

The outside angle of the transom is 12 degrees as shown below.

In this first picture, I've measured the external diameter of the current tip just inside the transom. As you can see it measures 2 7/8 inches.

The second picture shows the exit side of the snail with an outside diameter of about 3 inches.

The inside part of the current exhaust tip extends 1 1/2 inches from the inside of the transom.

As you can see, the distance from the inside end of the current ehaust tip to the end of the snail is about 7 1/2 inches. The total distance from the inside of the transom to the trailing edge of the snail is about 9 inches total (7 1/2 + 1 1/2= 9 inches)

This picture is to simply show the hole pattern on the current tips that are holding them on.

Update on this old thread. I ordered some exhaust tips from Tom at JetboatPerformance.com and they should be in next week.

Currently I have a 3" exit from the snail going into a 3" hose and then clamped onto a 2 7/8 Trumpet exhaust tip. What is getting made is a 4" inch angled cut tip that once inside the transom, will reduce down to 3" to fit into the hose. With the bigger tip, I'll have to cut larger holes in the transom.

Hey Cliff, There is a rubber place over in an industrial area near 35 and mockingbird.  I cant remember the name of it but their sign has orange letters. They will probably be your best option to get that exhaust hose locally.  I know I can find the name it will just take a little digging.  Seems like it is {something} rubber company.  I'll post it up once I figure out the name.

Lol @ D-man----no thanks on your special tool bro...looks very agressive. lol.

Matt....I took the old hose off the other day and it looked real good. With the new tips, I'll actually be using LESS rubber hose so the hose I have now will work fine as I'll just trim it to size.

Ummmmmm, ya okay. You'll be the first I notify. Lol.

The ONLY way I'd use that tool on the Crusader is if I were about to lose it in a divorce. In my case, I'm not married so I don't have to worry about it. Lol..... But, chainsaws are good for "Dividing up the community property" if you know what I mean....lol.

Got my exhaust tips in last night from Tom over at Jetboat Performance. I cannot believe the level of workmanship that he produced. These pictures do not serve the tips and workmanship any justice at all. All I can say is WOW!!!

I decided to go with an angle / cut tip exhaust.

It has a burn proof flapper internally

The tips are 3 inches going into the tip and 4 inches when travelling through the transom. The outside observer will only see the 4 inch tip outside the transom.
