Engine cuts out

I am have a problem when I get to about 4500 rpm motor cuts out/breaks up. When I back off the throtle it smooths out. step on it again does it again. changed plugs, wires, cap, rotor. Changed fuel pump, lines, regulator, and filter. Changed fuel. I am stumped. Help. What do I look for?

Is it a new motor are old one you have been running? Did you change are do any thing to the carbs? It may need more fuel, bigger jets! You might have the motor leaning out!  are do you have some sort of rev lemit on the motor/msd!

Neil : I think we need to pull the tops off of those carbs and look at them ,maybe the floats on them need to be adjusted ..  then look inside the distributor and make sure it all good in there , change out the coil also .. Then if it still does it , might see if you can bypass that Hi Fire box .. Will you ignition work wothout the box ??

I think he said he changed the lines! but i think it is a fuel issue some were and it is most likely leaning out! if you keep running it like it is it could do more damage

Make sure the metering rods in the Edelbrocks are moving free. I've seen them stick more times than not. think.gif

Usually have some small screens. But that don't mean they are there. I'd check the rods, and if they move freely, time to open the top and make sure nothing is plugging the main jets! :smile30:

I looked in the distributor, nothing. I had recently changed rockers. I will re run the valves. Fuel pump was changed. Thought it was a weak mech pump. Put the Holley Black back on it but it sat for a while??    think.gif    These are AVS Thunder series carbs. Should't have a problem with needle and seat??      think.gif      They always worked great.    think.gif  No filter screens. Changed and cleaned filters. I will take tops off carbs. Box seems ok or else it wouldn't start?? Coil?? in fact it runs great until higher rpm, then back out and smooths out.    think.gif    I need to go put in the water again.

I think it in in the fuel .. I think the carb might have gummed up on you.

I have a spare coil just like your at home if you wnat to try that ..

I had a similar problem with my motor at WOT, the motor would sputter or cough. I replaced fuel filters, cleaned the fuel lines, drained my tank (so I thought), replaced spark plugs, replaced wires, took apart and cleaned the carb etc and the sputtering continued. The whole problem started when I put gas in the boat in Okmulgee, Oklahoma back in August...I thought I was doing myself a favor by using a local (old) gas station that offered "real gas".

As of the Tawakoni Regatta, the sputtering has stopped and all I can think of it that I managed to ingest any remaining water that may have been in the gas.

As mentioned above, maybe it is a "bad gas" situation.
