correct me if I'm wrong,  but D3 are open chamber heads,  basically giving low compression numbers where the Doves are Closed chamber and giving high compression numbers  think.gif

i have two 460s one with D3 and one with Doves  crazy.gif

Its a stock 460, not stroked, its only a 2 bolt main so its not getting a stroker kit in it. It has aftermarket comp cams roller tip rockers. You cant install the push rod guides upside down. I have one of the best guys in the dfw area thats going to look at the heads, but i highly doubt they can be saved. Cylinders 1 and 2 are cracked between the intake and exhaust valves, 3 exhaust valves are mushroomed so im leaning towards basically scrapping the heads. Its a shame

man you haters ive had pleanty of 2 bolt chevy blocks 468, 496 and even sprayed them one made over 800 hp and never broke one time! :smile16:

Anyhow I would go with the same block 30 over and some coated pistons like was said already, if the budget allows get a set of doves if not bronze the cracks put bigger valves, gasket mactch the ports on intake and heads if not already done, rings and bearings and roll with it! Be a good little motor with not a lot of molla! My .02 :smile30:

Not sure about Ford heads , but I had a 24 valve Cummins diesel with lots of cracks in the head and I had it repaired . I ran that motor for many , many more miles after the repair with a oversized turbo and never had a problem with the repair that was done to the head .

What causes that? Valve train not adjusted right? Springs too tight?

D0's and D3's are both closed chamber. The chamber size is smaller on the D0. D2 is open chamber.

My stock 460 with D3 heads went 67 in my Glastron on spray. Ain't nothing wrong with D3 heads. Plus pump gas will never be an issue on D3's but could be on D0's with flat tops.

Brian said that whoever installed the heads over torqued them. Also they didn't lube the bolts when torquing them down which in turn gave wrong numbers. Apparently you can install the bolts dry in a chevy but not on a Ford. This in turn may have caused the heads to buckle and crack.

Damn, should never torque any head bolts dry, Ford or Chevy.

None issue with studs. http://www.race-mart.com/ARP-155-4003.html

Say what, they are both close chamber heads. D2's are open chamber and I have a set of all three at the shop. Doves are small chamber. D3's are big chamber! You can have the heads welded, there is a place here in Houston that does them and it's not that expensive. I am going to have mine fixed for $250.00. They even install new seats! :smile16:

Let me know what heads you are looking for.  My father in law has a huge marine / auto machine shop here in houston, and he has a ton of heads laying around.
