Well I just found out another interesting factoid. As of July of 2012 the government stopped the production of T-12 bulbs so in the near future it is going to get harder and more expensive to find them forcing everyone to go to the new T-8 fixtures & bulbs. MARVELOUS!!!!!

i knew the t12s were being faded out,  but didn't know the Gov was befind it,  guess it has to do with the mercury,

It is part of some new energy bill.

I had a couple of ballasts go bad in some 4 foot lights in the old shop and it was cheaper just to buy a two pack of complete fixtures that had ballasts already in them. This shop has some kind of metal halide lights that take 10 mintutes to warm up and are about $35 a bulb to replace. Hate em!! Was thinking about switching this entire shop over to florescent at some point.

in my opinion,  stay with the metal halide lights,  Right now I only put one fluorescent lite in the shop,  when i have the budget,  I'm putting the metal halides in there,  i hate fluorescents

can't really comment on that,  don't know how old the fixtures are or the bulbs,  nothing last for every,  especially after the 2000,  we use these type of lights as fishing light here on the coast,  for the reason they give us the service life....  and the bulbs we use are $50 a piece,  maybe you are buying cheap bulbs,  lol,  j/K

There is a little tag on the ballast that says what specific bulb to use. That's the ones I get. The other one came on 1/2 hour later. They do that on occasion for some reason.
