Alternator Charging Issue...

K, as some of ya know, my battery crapped out finally while we were in Bay City. Volt gauge has only showing 11 on the last couple outings, but I had been putting it off to the ancient battery. Swapped out the battery.. still only 11 volts on the gauge.

This is not a "one-wire" alternator by the way, its a Motorola if that matters. Anyway, over the weekend, I get in there messing with it. The belt was a little loose & the skinny wire that comes from the ign. terminal on the power strip to the alt.(guess thats what ya'd call the exciter wire?), the connection pulled off in my hand. So thinking that between the 2, thats probably where the issue is. So I put a new end on the wire, tighten the belt. Still only 11 volts on the gauge.

So with the key on, with a test light I have juice at the exciter wire, with the engine running I have juice there & at the big terminal on the back of the alternator, but still showing only 11 volts on the gauge. I even took the gauge out & put it on the battery in the truck, 12 volts engine off/14 volts engine running, so the new gauge appears to be fine.

Ran the alt. by O'Reilleys for grins to let them check it, guy says "it failed, probably the voltage regulator".. Then took it to Interstate today to let them have a look at it & see what it may need. Guy calls me & sez there's nothing wrong with it, it puttin out just fine.

So at this stage of the game, anybody got any ideas? I hate to buy an alternator & rig one up if this one is fine. Is there something else I could check or may be missing?

I wouldn't trust Oreily's guy either. You mite want to make sure the connection between battery and alt is clean on both ends.  think.gif

Kinda thinking the same thing here. When he told me it failed & I asked him why, he looked over at the machine & said "ummmmm" until I said "voltage regulator?" to which he repied, "uh, ya, maybe..."

The guy at Interstate been doing it for years & he's worked on stuff for me before so I trust him. Plus my friend that took it over there stood there & watched him test it so he was seeing the same results on the machine... But then again, everybody can have an off day I guess. I dunno, he did mention another thing to check, that I didn't do. I'll see what happens this afternoon...

Could always take it to the other O'Reilleys & see what they come up with since I have it right here.

I would not be surprised if it is something in the ratnest wiring in the boat. That is another subject for another day,  winter project I imagine...

I rewired mine, not hard, put an automotive fuse block under the dash too, get rid of the fuse block mounted in the back of them. Clean look

If you only have one field wire going to it instead of two (the other would be a ground). you might want to make sure the thing is fully grounded to the engine.  Connect a jumper from the alternator to the block while it is running and see what happens.  Other than that, the diodes (w/built in regulator) are probably bad, which means a new alternator.

I will try that this evening, thanks. Yessir, its just the one field wire. Stupid question here I'm sure: Will aluminum serve as a ground point? Thinking about how the alt. is mounted is why I ask.

Yeah, aluminum will make a good ground, but you got to make sure your ground circuit is getting back to your starter, or where ever you have the neg. wire coming off the battery.

Ok, cool. I will check it out this evening with a jumper & see what it does. Thanks for the heads up!

You talking about one of those Motorolas like this one I have? If you were gonna come out to look at my '76 on the rocker arm situation, you could bring that too & could try it out. Have some cold Buds in the fridge if you think you may make it out.

Fire the boat up on the hose and then disconnet the battery. Boat dies then your alternator is bad.

I had Auto zone check my starter and they said it was fine. Well it didnt turn over the boat engine...DOnt know if I would trust auto parts dude like was said earlier.
