BTW some progress not sure I posted this but brought the old 383 from the cuda to the house so it's under the carport now with the 440 and the 360 for the CJ.  Anyways I got a little time over the Holiday weekend and pulled the heads and intake off the 383.  The motor is EOL and the cam and lifters are not reuseable.  The heads don't look as bad as I thought they would and should clean up nice.  I need to pull the springs and valves.  Will probably still replace the springs.  Especially if Galen has an old set he won't be using that I can buy from him.  So that's about all I got done besides getting the enclosure around the frame for the CJ.  Still need to fix up the stands and level it back off so the water will drain out of it.

I have an isky mechanical roller new in box 272 at.050, .630 lift and matching springs with retainers I will donate to the cause. You will need roller lifters, comp 829-16s are reasonable and will work in a stock block. What do you need to get this thing done?

Galen that is a lot of cam for this little motor.  The motor will be going to the machine shop in the next couple of weeks if all goes well.  Its getting bored out 30 over.  I have the pistons already.  I was going to use my 509 purpleshaft cam 509 inch lift but it won't be salvageable.  I like the idea of a roller though.  This is just a little 500hp 440 nothing big.  Figuring it will be about 10:1 compression.  Will be a stock crank and rods.  JJ warned me not to putt too much in this thing and that I shouldn't push it much over 70mph.

Sounds like a sweet deal there , for 470.00 for the lifter , you would have a killer roller cam setup . The cam may be a little large , but it would work to get the engine closer to completion . It would sound good with that cam ..

I also have a comp 23-706-9 mech roller with a damaged lobe, (on the nose). it is on a 108lsa. grind # RX 296R-8  263/270 at .050. Comp can regrind it to a smaller profile for around 100$ last time I checked. If you could have it cut down to around 253/260 at .050 with a .550 lift it would work good and last a long time.  Call and talk to them, see if they can regrind it to fit your needs.  Throwing a hydraulic flat tappet in it without adjustable rockers won't last long unless you spend the money on adjustable rockers and have the lifter bores checked. Stock chrysler blocks are notorious for one or two lifters not wanting to spin.  I will dig around and see what I can come up with. Go to "Moparts" check in the engine parts for sale in the forums. Lots of good used parts and engines come up from time to time.

Galen I have a lifter boring tool to use to make sure the lifter bores are all good and yes I know the issues with mopars been building them a long time.  I haven't been on Moparts in a long time though.  that cam sounds like a good deal and to regrind it to 550 is about right I was figuring on something in the 525-565 range for this motor.  I wasn't as concerned about the cam choice just yet as I was still not ready for it and was hoping my old 509 was still good.  Now that it is not been thinking of something like a 525-565 would be good. Been thinking about a cam from 440 source too.

The 509 is hydraulic flat tappet but that was still on the mild side build in the 383 still 500 hp though that would spin 6500 with the factory non adjustable rockers.  Wish I hadn't let it sit so long would have just freshened her up and dropped her in the boat.
