Hi all, Could anyone here help me with a decision for my wife and I to relocate to texas. We are wondering where would be the best place to start out? as far as rent prices and available jobs. And of course we got to be around water for our v-drive. I am pretty much able to do anything work related have been in skilled trades most of my life. We would prefer not so much rat race as we like a little more quite. I have been looking on craigslist but there is so much area, Not sure where to be starting out would benefit my wife and I. I am 53 she is 47. Anyways if you can offer any advice I thank you in advance :)

Thanks Texas!
Dan,Lisa.

Well, it's tough to make a recommendation without knowing a few things.  First off, what kinda of climate do you like?  We have swamps to desert and flat coastal plains to rolling hills and mountains.  Normally, there's water to boat in just about everywhere except this year with this exceptional drought we're going through.  Personally, I'm kinda partial to my area.  (Columbus which is about half way between Houston and San Antonio).  If you don't want to work in the oilfield, good jobs are kinda scarce around here.  But, the oilfield and related industries are booming down in south Texas.

I live in the middle of nowhere , at the end of a dead end road . But I can be in downtown Houston in 20 minutes . In my opinion there is always a job for a man who is willing to go out and get one in the Houston area , but you have to be willing to work . I have never had to look for very long to find work , but at times have had to commute farther than I really wanted to . Depending on what your personal abilities are you should have no problems finding work as long as you are willing to work .

Sounds like everyone is proud of there areas and thats good. the smaller areas your telling me about are what we like. How are these areas for renting a house? I have done a web search but these list more ads than homes for rent or sale. I own my house here but givin this area today I doubt I could sell it most every house in my town is is for sale as well..just going to have to leave it for now i guess. Are there any places for rent that have a big garage I own alot of shop equip. and have to put all this somewhere. cost of living is a factor as I am sure you will agree. Cant live on 10.00 an hour and pay 1000.00 or so for rent. all three of these towns you guys showed me seem very nice. And we are considering these.
Thanks guys!

Go to craigslist and start looking at the rental section , that will give you a fair idea of what things rent for in any given area . Then look in the job section of craigslist for that same city , that might help you to get an idea . If you are really serious about wanting to boat I would look in the south , it is warm enough to boat year round down here .

Have you searched www.trulia.com? You can search listings of stuff for sale or for rent. Just type in an area you may be interested in & see where it takes you. Pretty neat site, we have been using it lately in our search for a house. Far as finding one with a big garage or shop building, you may be able to put that into the search to help narrow it down. I haven't looked at any rental property, but out of all the listings we looked at around here, several had decent size buildings on them.

I live in Victoria, which is kind of centrally located between Houston, San Antonio, & Corpus Christi. About 60,000+/- population. Town is ok, its growing. There is a new Caterpiller plant going up as we speak, huge... Housing seems to be doing well, new ones going up in several subdivisions. Two new high schools & a jr. high just went up last year, all at the same time. Now two overpasses are going in out on the loop. All this activity seems to be that employment opportunity is pretty decent.

Far as boating, its ok. There are a couple lakes within a half hours drive from town. One of them (Coleto Creek Reservoir) they are supposed to be enacting some over transom exhaust restriction. Not sure if it did or ever will go in effect, noone seems to have the straight story. Other than that, its a pretty nice lake. The other, Lake Texana, is not too bad.. Can have a tendency to get rough, but there is very little traffic on it. Other than that, we do a little traveling to other areas, most of which are within a 2-3 hour drive.

Hope some of this helps, I'm sure more folks will chime in soon. As Tim mentioned, there is different climates & terrain to pick from.

I love it in Magnolia. North of Houston. I have many friends in the oilfield industry, could help you find a job. Our area isn't bad on cost of living, good schools, and lots of other industries as well. I've heard the rest of the country has been hit hard by the recession. I've got family on the West Coast, that is scared to move because of pay cuts. But our cost of living is much lower than theirs. I don't know about your area in comparrison. There is a ton of work out here if you look for it. And our great state is recovering faster than the rest from what I hear. You are pretty safe in most places in Texas! think.gif

North Dallas area sure was good to me. I lived in Lewisville by 35E and 121. You are less than 10 miles from DFW, Bass Pro Shops, and Lewisville lake. Downtown is 20 minutes, and for an hour you can hit 10+ good lakes, casino (Oklahoma), and kinda the beginning of all the decent hunting if you're in to that. Hunting close to town is very expensive though. Just my 2 cents.
