*The True Cost of Owning a Hod Rod Boat*

Year 1:

Spent the savings on a V-Drive flatty, seller said it was in great condition, just needs some TLC.
$40 on a set of plugs.
$1100 for a new dining room table for the wife.
Going to lake, $250 on 4 sets of bearings, races, and grease for the trailer.
Back on the road, drop it the water, ..Horrible noise, no start, back at the garage after
$90 on a starter rebuild kit. Proper shim on the starter, yes, back on the water.
Picking-up pieces of pot metal from the cheap Chinese-made starter gear, some lodged in the drain cocks, taking on water.
$325 on a NEW %#$!&# bad-ass, hi-torque starter!
Fire her up!
What’s that noise? Is that an exhaust leak?
$ 4.40 on some burn salve for my forearm.
$ 40 on a set of Fel-Pro exhaust gaskets.
Oh,….
$ 40 on a set of Fel-Pro exhaust gaskets - round port.
Romp on it good coming out of the 5 mph zone.
$250 ticket for excessive noise.
$200 on everything Meguire’s makes for bringing back that gel-coat finish.
Rub rail catches my shorts while waxing the paint.
$1.20 for some stainless #6 screws after rub rail peels-away from the boat.
$20 on a new pair of Flame Shorts from the Good Guys show.
$50 on a used oil cooler at the Good Guys show swat meet.
$35 on beer at the Good Guys show swat meet.
$120 on some V-Drive parts at the Good Guys show swat meet.
$12 on beer at the Good Guys show swat meet.
$32 on 100 feet of plastic color-matched wire conduit/looms.
$13 on a hot dog and Phili Cheese Steak sandwich.
$157 on various stainless steel fasteners.
$12 (+ a 3 dollar tip for lovely girl) on beer at the Good Guys show swat meet.
$45 on that aluminium thing that I could use…I could cut it and make a custom paddle or something…
Race this jet boat back to the cove.
$250 on a speeding ticket.

Year 2:
$70 + $35 shipping Haz materials charge on some cool Nitromethane additive I bought from TX.
$450 for a mall shopping spree for the wife.
$120 at the Holiday Inn after trailer hub spins and locks-up.
$250 on 4 sets of bearings, races, and grease.
$ Six pack of beer in trade for a Holley linkage 10-28 adapter at Camp far West.
$1300 on trick garage accessories package!

$1.20 for some stainless #6 screws after rub rail peels-away from the boat.
Where are the car keys?
Hold on, I think I can reach ‘em…
$20 on gauze and salve / burn cream.
$110 on a new GM car key fob
$600 for new sofa we had to have in the living room
‘cuz it matches the other sofa we have for the wife.
$90 on a new stainless braided fuel line to the carbs after Nitro eats the rubber lining and fuel sprays all over the engine and boat.
$220 on a new chrome fire estinguisher and polished billet fire extinguisher holder unit.
$90 on fire extinguisher that *fits* the polished billet fire extinguisher holder unit.
Making back-to-back passes at Camp Far West, man! F%$! Yeah!
$175 on 14 quarts of Royal Purple oil after boiling it at Camp Far West.
$340 on a NEW oil cooler from Dan Olsen.
Race this tunnel jet boat across the lake –
$275 for speeding ticket.

Year 3:
Hot roddin’ at lake Berryessa giving rides to friends, water shoot-up from the floor?
Quickly get back to the launch ramp, right bunk floats-off the trailer, water filling the boat, no bunk, it’s 100 degrees, I’ll hold my breath and get the bunk in place, you center the boat…
$80 on a new double chrome plated brass shaft seal and spare seals!
$1200 on a new washer dryer, y’know that new design where you load the clothes in the side instead of the top, for the wife.
$210 on outdoor carpet, glue, stainless hardware, and pressure treated 6”X12’ – rebuilt both bunks.
$250 on 4 sets of bearings, races, and grease.
Rub rail catches life vest as I clime in the boat.
$1.20 for some stainless #6 screws after rub rail peels-away from the boat.
$250 on 4 sets of bearings, races, and grease.
Lose a race to this guy in a shovel nose hydro.
$1250 for a nitrous system.
Run a too lean while racing a picklefork hydro back to the launch ramp.
$10,000 for a new motor

Year 4:
$250 on 4 sets of bearings, races, and grease.
Oh for F%#$! Sake, spent $100 on Bearing Buddies – done!
Rub rail catches shirt as I walk by the boat.
$1.20 for some stainless #6 screws after rub rail peels-away from the boat.
Get pissed-off a grab that rub rail…
$390 local hospital bill for 6 stitches in my hand.
Making some hot passes at the lake, looking good baby!
$250 ticket for excessive noise.
$3 after the Holley 10-28 linkage adapter fails.
$7 Six pack of beer to calm down after boat goes hard right after a fast pass.

Year 5:
$900 to the body shop for the rub rail delete.
$2400 10-71 blower system complete with intercooler.
Race a flatty a Camp far West
$400 to polish that blower
$32,000 for a new car, fully loaded with those heated seats she wanted, but in order to get the heated seats I had to purchase the CA Custom Package which includes faux wood-grain appliqués, leather steering whee cover, and custom rims - for the wife.
Romp on it good coming out the 5 mph zone
Is that a cop?
$300 ticket for “Exhibition Of Speed”
$700 prop after misreading that beach landing.
$600 for a set of Zoomies!
$250 ticket for Excessive noise.
Race that guy across the lake
$300 for a new blower belt
$30 for drinks after getting him to tow me back to the lodge.
$157 on drinks all around, keep ‘em coming.
$1500 for the DUI attorney

Year 6:
$24,500 bought a new hydro!
$300 on a new rudder after misreading that beach landing.
$300 on a set of Casale gears to ‘REALLY get her outta the hole”
Romp on it good coming out of the 5 mph zone to test the gear ratio.
Get a *warning* from the cop on exceeding speed limit.
$150 ticket for no life vest.
Car keys fly-out of the cup holder.
$110 on a new GM car key fob.
$5,400 for a Hawaii vacation for the wife.
$100 for my show entry at Bass Lake 2009.

Been lucky, had the rogers in the water as of last weekend for one year and have only killed two starters :smile15: and ten dollers every Sunday ( might have missed 1 or 2) at Loves and at least a 12 pack and a bag of ice and gas..Got to love it !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :smile13:
